Like Saloni Singh, Ruchi Yadav is another potential footballer from Asia’s second largest ‘unauthorized’ region on the outskirts of Delhi, Sangam Vihar. The 17-year-old girl has already taken part in three national championships for Delhi in under-14, under-17 and the senior national championship this year. Following her impressive performance in the senior national championship as the central attacking midfielder, Gokulam FC called her into the training and selection trials for the ongoing Indian Women’s League (IWL). Still, Ruchi had to return home to Delhi due to her examination in the middle of the selection trial.

The Journey of Ruchi Yadav

Ruchi’s father Vijendra is an auto-driver. She is the second youngest of the three sisters and two brothers. Her father has to struggle a lot, driving an auto-rickshaw almost the whole day for the earning, to run his family. Still, he gave a lot of support to his daughter, who started playing football on the cemented platform of her school when she was studying only 2nd class.

Ruchi transformed her game, practicing seriously in the ‘Khel Khel Me Foundation’ under the observation of Anirban Ghosh. Ruchi, like Saloni Singh, made her almost indispensable in the KKM girls’ team and took part in several knock-out tournaments. Even they used to participate in those tournaments where the boys’ team took part. While playing for KKM, Ruchi developed her skill, drew the attention of the Delhi women’s team coach, and ensured her berths in the state team.

Ruchi Yadav’s Regret

Ruchi regretted the opportunity she missed with Gokulam FC where she had to go back home due to the 11th standard examinations. She said,

“The coach of the Gokulam FC women’s team was impressed with my performance in the training I attended for almost 20 days. Even I got the hint that I would be contracted with the team for the IWL. But it was my 11th standard final examination and my parents asked me to return. So I had to go back. Anyway, I will have to develop more as a footballer and wait for the opportunity to play in the prestigious competition.”

The Future

Ruchi has decided she will build up her career with football. Her parents are also supportive. The student of 12th standard stated,

“My parents support me. But at the same time, they ask me to carry on my studies also. I know how much struggle my father does every day to run our family. I just need to make admirable earnings from football and for that, you need to wear a senior India jersey.”

Xavi Factor

Ruchi has idolized former Barcelona legend Xavi. She watches Barcelona’s matches, especially the games when Xavi was at his best. She commented,

“I dream if I could send decisive passes as Xavi used to send. I try to bring accuracy to my passing in training sessions. But I know it is not so easy, will take a long time.”
