Royal Challengers Bangalore History
The Bangalore got its name Royal Challengers as owner Vijay Mallya wanted to use his own brand for the naming. Hence his popular liquor brand, Royal Challenge was chosen.
The Royal Challengers Bangalore team have been one of the most unlucky teams in Indian Premier League history. They entered the IPL finals on three occasions (2009, 2011, 2016) and failed to win every time.
-- Advertisement --RCB is known for its dreaded batting prowess that once included Chris Gayle, Virat Kohli, AB de Villiers, and Yuvraj Singh. Some of the other prominent Royal Challengers Bangalore players include Yuzvendra Chahal, Umesh Yadav, Mohammed Siraj, and Moeen Ali.
Royal Challengers Bangalore Team Performance
The Iconic Team
Right from the very first edition, RCB flaunted big names like Rahul Dravid, Anil Kumble, Dale Steyn, and Jacques Kallis. In spite of this, the team finished second-last in the league and won just four matches out of 14. The disappointing result led to a lot of controversies and public criticism.

Kumble Magic
In the next edition of the league, IPL 2009, the costliest player of the league, Kevin Pietersen was grabbed by RCB. He also captained the team that season. Pietersen had to leave mid-season due to national duty and Anil Kumble took over the reins. Things changed drastically after this and the team started winning matches and hearts!

RCB finished third in the qualifying round and entered the semi-finals. They defeated the very successful team Chennai Super Kings and set faced Deccan Chargers in the finals. Unfortunately, after a really tense match, the team lost. However, the drastic difference in performance from the first league was a big win for RCB franchise.
The 2010 IPL edition was also quite successful for the team. They entered the semi-finals but were defeated by Mumbai Indians. After defeating Deccan Chargers in the third-place playoff, RCB entered the Champions League.

The Gayle Storm
Virat Kohli was the only retained player in the fourth edition of the Indian Premier League. Several high profile cricketers were signed on by the team. Of these, Chris Gayle and Ab de Villiers became mighty famous with their antics on the field.

With a season filled with a lot of smashing and some sizzling victories, the team finished on the top of the table. Chennai Super Kings got the better of the team and RCB lost in the 1st qualifier. They bounced back in the 2nd qualifier by defeating Mumbai Indians and fans were really hopeful of the trophy. Unfortunately, it was once again taken away from them by CSK.

Disappointments
IPL 2012 was very disappointing for RCB as they couldn’t seal their spot for the semi-finals. The team had finally found its groove and the year turned out to be a damper. Despite some record-breaking performances, especially by Chris Gayle, the team couldn’t qualify for the semi-finals in 2013 as well.
Although the team managed to qualify for some playoffs, the trophy has still eluded RCB. It is quite surprising that one of the best teams on paper hasn’t been able to lift the cup. However, Royal Challengers Bangalore continues to win thunderous fan support for all their matches. Loyal fans cannot wait to finally see their beloved team win the title.

Royal Challengers Bangalore Franchise
RCB is now a 100% subsidiary of United Spirits and a professionally run outfit. If that helps in you deciding whom to support. #IPLfinal

The team is owned by United Spirits Limited. Though helmed by Vijay Mallya in the beginning, after his financial scandal, Amrit Thomas took over as the Chairman of the team.
Zeven, a company dedicated to transform sports in India, is an associate partner of RCB. DNA Networks acts as the licensing partner for the team.
Royal Challengers Bangalore Sponsors
Numerous brands have been associated with RCB over the years as their kit sponsors, shirt sponsors, and for shirt branding. Mallya’s home brand has stayed the primary sponsor. However, as advertising liquor brands on t-shirts were stopped, Royal Challenge Sports Gear and Kingfisher Packaged Drinking Water took over as shirt brands.

The Orange Cap changes holders. But relax, it’s still in the #RCB camp, Gayle takes it! http://t.co/K3kzohs7GX
— Royal Challengers (@RCBTweets) April 23, 2013
Chris Gayle has (very unsurprisingly) dominated the maximum sixes list. He won the award in 2011 (44 sixes), 2012 (59 sixes), 2013 (51 sixes), and 2015 (38 sixes). Virat Kohli won it in 2016 (38).
Chris Gayle won the Most Valuable Player in 2011 and Virat Kohli won it in 2016.
