Doubles specialist Rohan Bopanna has been selected as the flag-bearer for the Indian team in the tennis event for the upcoming Asian Games in Hangzhou, scheduled to commence on September 23. The All India Tennis Association (AITA) has announced the 12-member Indian tennis squad for the Hangzhou Asian Games.
Bopanna is likely to partner with Ramkumar for the doubles event, while Yuki Bhambri and Saketh Myneni, who are already playing together on the ATP Tour, will form another doubles pair. The women’s team will be led by Ankita Raina, who won a bronze medal in singles at the 2018 Asian Games.
The Indian contingent aims to replicate its success from the previous edition, where they secured a gold and two bronze medals. Bopanna, along with Divij Sharan, clinched the doubles gold by defeating Kazakhstan’s Alexander Bublik and Denis Yevseyev. Prajnesh Gunneswaran also contributed with a bronze medal in men’s singles.
Rohit Rajpal has been appointed as the captain of the men’s squad, while Ankita Bhambri will lead the women’s team. The core of the Indian contingent remains consistent, with Ramanathan, Nagal, and Bopanna also featuring in the squad that participated in the Jakarta Games. Four female players who competed in Jakarta, namely Ankita, Karman, Ruturaj, and Prarthana, have also retained their spots, while Sahaja and Vaidehi are the new additions to the team.
