Indian tennis sensation Rohan Bopanna achieved a historic milestone at the Australian Open 2024 men’s doubles semi-finals on Wednesday. Bopanna made history by becoming the world’s oldest player to attain the no 1 position in tennis. Partnering with Matthew Ebden, the 43-year-old Bopanna secured a straight-sets victory over the Argentinian pair of Máximo González and Andrés Molteni, propelling them into the last-four stage of the year’s inaugural Grand Slam event.

The Rohan Bopanna-Ebden duo triumphed with a 6-4, 7-6 (5) scoreline. Following the ATP rankings update on Monday, Bopanna is set to officially claim the coveted numero uno spot, with his partner Ebden securing the second position.

Bopanna is set to compete in the semi-finals of the Australian Open for the first time in his career. In earlier years, he reached the men’s doubles semi-finals at the French Open in 2022 and Wimbledon in 2013, 2015, and 2023. Additionally, Bopanna has been a finalist at the US Open twice, in 2010 and 2023. His sole Grand Slam victory occurred at the 2017 French Open, where he partnered with Canadian Gabriela Dabrowski to secure the mixed doubles title.

Bopanna exceeded the achievement of Rajeev Ram from the United States, who previously held the record, by attaining the world No. 1 ranking at the age of 38 in October 2022. Bopanna’s inaugural match in the men’s singles event at the Australian Open took place in 2006, and he has consistently participated in the tournament for 17 consecutive years.
