Highlights

  • In the entire series, 37-year-old Dhoni narrated the terrific journey of the Yellow Army in the season.
  • The much-awaited docudrama on Indian Premier League's (IPL) most popular franchise Chennai Super Kings (CSK) 'Roar of the Lion' is finally out on Hotstar.com on Wednesday .
  • In this five-episode series, apart from watching “Captain cool” getting emotional, the reactions of fellow teammates in the segment are interesting to watch.

With IPL 2019 all set to start in just three days, Hotstar Specials has launched its first series Roar of the Lion. The docu-drama, directed by Amir Rizvi and executive produced by Kabir Khan, has the CSK captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni talk about the entire journey of Chennai Super Kings. It includes the spot-fixing controversy that got the IPL team suspended for two years by Lodha committee in 2015.

The five-part docudrama series traces the return of MS Dhoni-led team to the IPL fold after a gap of two years and their historic season triumph.

On his collaboration with Hotstar, MS Dhoni said, “I am excited to see my first production collaboration come to life. The story and the narrative are unique, and we believe it has found a perfect home in the bold and non-conforming Hotstar Specials.”

Comes in Three Episodes

Divided into three chapters – Before the Storm, Separation and Born Again, the first episode gives a glimpse of the collaboration or in Dhoni’s words, the ‘arranged marriage’ between him and the Chennai team.

As team owner N Srinivasan states, Dhoni became a part of Chennai and its people. “He would go around on his bike, flaunting his long hair. It was something new but the people related to him and he became their own. He was the ‘thalaiva’ on the field,” Srinivasan shared.

The emotional rewind by MS Dhoni

In the docudrama, CSK’s captain Dhoni revealed that their third IPL trophy was only for the fans who believed in the team against all odds. Dhoni revealed that CSK came back with a tagline in Tamil, ‘Thirumbi Vandhutenu Sollu’, which roughly translates to ‘tell them we are back’.

Dhoni also revealed that at the start of the season, they had decided to make it a memorable one for their fans, who were anxiously waiting for their favourite team’s return.

Talking about his association with CSK and Chennai in the IPL, Dhoni said it was like an ‘arranged marriage’ for him. Bringing up the chapter of infamous 2013 IPL betting and spot-fixing scandal for which the franchise was suspended for two years. Dhoni termed it a bigger crime than murder.

Talked about the Infamous Spot Fixing Controversy

Srinivasan’s son-in-law Gurunath Meiyappan was accused of spot-fixing. Dhoni clarifies that Guru was part of the team but at what capacity, was debatable. He shares that for them he was not the owner but the owner’s son-in-law.

He also states that they did deserve punishment but the quantum was too harsh. He questions, “You tend to take it personally. The team did no wrong. Why did we need to go through this?”

Other prominent CSK players Suresh Raina, Ravindra Jadeja, Shane Watson, Deepak Chahar, Mohit Sharma and coaches Stephen Flemming and Michael Hussey also made appearances in the docudrama that traced the journey of CSK in their third IPL title.

CSK were given a tag of ‘Dad’s Army’ before the start of the IPL 2018 because a lot of their players were above thirty years of age and everyone wondered if the senior pros would be able to deliver.

After the painful voyage of 18-odd minutes, the last part celebrates the comeback of the team. Visuals of fans celebrating the return and eventually the victory last year are as thrilling as the IPL matches.

Also, with IPL just around the corner, this would definitely also help Dhoni and co. strike an emotional chord with the audience.
