Grandmaster D Gukesh, a youthful chess prodigy from India, defeated Fabiano Caruana in the Armageddon on Tuesday in the seventh round of the 2023 Norway Chess Tournament. Dommaraju Gukesh, 17, played well enough for a tie in the Classical match.
Even though he lost the queen endgame in the Armageddon, he was fortunate because Caruana ran out of time and lost the match. Caruana has struggled with time management issues throughout this competition. He defeated GM Nodirbek Abdusattorov in a Classical match on Monday, but he could have easily lost the match by taking too long.
Gukesh now occupies fifth place on the standings after winning with a score of 10/21. Gukesh has put up some impressive performances at this competition, even defeating Dutch GM and Tata Steel Chess champion Anish Giri in an earlier round.
Magus Carlsen, a five-time World Champion, has struggled to win a Classical game at this tournament, which has been the talk of the tournament. He drew the game with Alireza Firouzja on Tuesday, extending his winless run.
But in Armageddon, Carlsen, who opted out of the World Championships this year, proved superior to Firouzja. He presently holds down sixth place with a 9/21 score.
