The previous four months have been a memorable one for the wicketkeeper-batsman, he became a match-winner for the Indian Test team in India vs Australia series, and then in India vs England series too.
“This is a massive opportunity for young Rishabh, he has come off successfully in series against Australia and England, no doubt it has given him the confidence to take on a new role,” DC head coach Ricky Pointing said in a press release.
Despite having experienced players like Ajinkya Rahane and Steve Smith, and a senior pro like R. Ashwin who led Punjab Kings two years ago, the franchise of Delhi Capitals stuck to their youth policy. The franchise gave chance to young Iyer in 2018 to lead the side and allowed him to grow into the job. The management has shown a similar trust in Pant.
“I see this season as a learning period for Rishabh. The youngster has a beautiful opportunity to learn from experienced players like Ajinkya, Smith, Ashwin, and Shikhar Dhawan. If all of them help him out, I am sure Rishabh and Delhi Capitals will do well,” Delhi Ranji team coach KP Bhaskar, said in a statement.
“Rishabh shouldn’t go into a shell and bogged down with all these big stars around. This is time to show his leadership skills. He has done well for India this season, his confidence is high now, I am sure he will have things under control,” Bhaskar added.
In the year 2017-18, Pant led Delhi to the Ranji Trophy final, he was only 20 then. KP Bhaskar recalls the decision to give the captaincy to young Rishabh Pant. “When he took over Delhi, he was very raw. But he has matured over the years. He was made captain of Delhi Ranji team with a long-term vision.”
“Being a wicketkeeper, he can keep a close watch all around the field. He has an aggressive batting style, but deep down he is a very cool guy. That’s his strength,” Bhaskar observed.
Congratulations! To the very young Rishabh Pant for the new role and responsibility.
Team #KreedOn extends the heartiest well wishes to Delhi Capitals and hopes a sooner recovery for Shreyas Iyer. Get well soon champ!
All the very best for future endeavors, Rishabh and team DC.
