India’s esteemed sports administrator, Randhir Singh, has been appointed to lead the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) during the upcoming Asian Games in Hangzhou, China. This decision came after the International Olympic Committee (IOC) declined to recognize the recent OCA election, citing irregularities.

The IOC has requested Randhir Singh, a former secretary general of the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) and a past member of the IOA, to continue serving as the acting president of the OCA.

The controversy arose when Kuwait’s Sheikh Ahmad Al-Fahad Al-Sabah, who had been banned by the IOC for three years due to alleged involvement in the OCA elections in Bangkok, saw his election as OCA president being rejected. An investigation into the polls was launched, and the ethics commission recommended not recognizing Sheikh Ahmad’s election.

The IOC said in the letter,

“Seeing as the IOC investigation is likely not to be concluded before October 2023 and since the IOC has not recognised the election of Sheikh Talal Al-Sabah, the IOC will continue to work with you as OCA’s acting president and with the OCA Executive Board that was in place prior to the Bangkok General Assembly.”

The letter further read,

“We expect that you continue to direct the OCA administration in all matters, including the calling of any Executive Boards, General Assemblies and any other meetings needed for the governance of the OCA.We would also appreciate if you could confirm to whom the IOC should address itself for daily administration business.”

The International Olympic Committee further said,

“Following the outcome of the IOC investigation, we will work with you to implement the next steps of a roadmap to ensure the continued functioning of the OCA according to the basic principles of good governance.”

A prominent figure in sports and an honorary member of the IOC, Randhir Singh has a rich history of service, having also served as OCA secretary general from 1991 to 2015. In September 2021, Randhir assumed the position of acting president of the Olympic Council of Asia, following Sheikh Ahmad Al-Fahad Al-Sabah’s decision to challenge the guilty verdict in a Swiss forgery trial. Randhir, a distinguished figure in sports with five Olympic shooting appearances and an Asian Games gold medal in 1978, was elevated to this role from his previous position as an honorary life vice president.
