Rahul Dravid’s Dilemma: BCCI Extends Offer as Nehra Bows Out of T20 Coaching Race

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has proposed a contract extension to Team India head coach Rahul Dravid, extending his tenure until the T20 World Cup in 2024. It is worth mentioning that Dravid, who assumed the coaching responsibilities from Ravi Shastri in November 2021, initially had a contract that ran until the ODI World Cup in 2023. The decision to extend Dravid’s contract was made by the BCCI following the refusal of Ashish Nehra, the coach of Gujarat Titans, to take on the role in the T20 format, as reported by the Indian Express.

Dravid’s time as the head coach of Indian Cricket Team was characterized by a combination of successes and setbacks. Although he guided India to victory in the Asia Cup series, he faced challenges with defeats in the T20 World Cup 2022 and World Cup 2023. Currently, Dravid is deliberating on the BCCI’s offer, carefully considering his future prospects. Additionally, he is sought after by Indian Premier League (IPL) franchises, including the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG), who have approached him for a mentoring role in the IPL 2024.

In the interim, Laxman, who assumed the position of NCA chief from Rahul Dravid in December 2021, expresses a strong desire to persist in his current role and contribute to the development of young talent in Indian cricket. Nevertheless, in the event that Dravid decides not to accept the contract extension, there is a likelihood that the board will encourage Laxman to assume leadership responsibilities. Laxman is presently leading the team in the ongoing five-match series against Australia.
