Following a disheartening loss in the ICC World Cup finals to Australia, Indian fans now face another setback as the tenure of head coach Rahul Dravid with the team has concluded. The ex-India captain, who assumed the coaching role last year, had initially been granted a one-year contract until the culmination of the World Cup.

While discussions about a potential extension for Dravid persist, there is currently no official confirmation. Under Dravid’s guidance, the team led by Rohit Sharma thrived and emerged as a formidable force across all formats. Achievements such as reaching the final of the WTC and the 50-over World Cup were attributed to Dravid’s coaching. His tenure was marked by commendable team spirit, and observers noted significant camaraderie among the players.

Additionally, the head coach collaborated closely with the group of players, supporting each team member throughout the previous year. India adopted an assertive approach in white-ball formats, aiming to dominate every aspect of the game. Although this strategy yielded success on occasion, there were instances where it did not. Nevertheless, India consistently adhered to an aggressive playing style. Many supporters of the team credited Dravid for fostering excellent camaraderie within the squad.

Prior to Dravid assuming the role of Team India’s coach, immense expectations were placed on him to secure victory in either the WTC Final, the World Cup, or both. Unfortunately, India fell short in both endeavors, prompting inquiries from the Board directed at Dravid. It has now been more than a decade since India last clinched any ICC Trophies, marking the 10th elimination for the Men in Blue in the knockout stages of ICC events.

The most recent triumph in an ICC event under MS Dhoni‘s leadership dates back to the 2013 Champions Trophy. Duncan Fletcher was the coach during that period. The looming question is whether India will consider a foreign coach or opt to support former Indian players for the coaching role. Only time will unravel this decision, but the prospect of Dravid securing a contract extension appears highly doubtful.
