PV Sindhu showcased her prowess at the French Open with an impressive performance, overcoming Beiwen Zhang from the USA in a thrilling three-game match to secure a spot in the women’s singles quarterfinals. Unfortunately, K. Srikanth faced disappointment at the French Open Super 750 badminton tournament on Thursday, experiencing a round-of-16 defeat against Guang Zu. Sindhu, a two-time Olympic medalist, marked her return from a knee injury with determination, rebounding from an initial game setback to defeat World No. 10 Zhang with scores of 13-21, 21-10, 21-14. This victory marked Sindhu’s first quarterfinal appearance of the season. Kidambi Srikanth’s loss is notable, given his 5-0 record against the Chinese player before the match.

The Indian player increased their game points to 11 with a precise return at the back, swiftly returning to the competition when Zhang made an error. Despite Zhang taking a 4-2 lead in the deciding set with two smashes, Sindhu leveled the score at 5-5 after winning a 34-shot rally. As Zhang’s strokes became choppy, Sindhu gained an 8-5 lead and eventually secured an 11-7 advantage. Maintaining a four-point lead at 17-13, Sindhu extended it further with an over-the-head smash. A well-executed drop shot provided Sindhu with six match points, and she clinched the victory when Zhang committed a net error. In the women’s doubles category, Tresa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand defeated Ashwini Ponnappa and Tanisha Crasto with a score of 16-21, 21-19, 21-17 in the first round.
