PV Sindhu’s Family has played a major role in her ascend in the badminton world. Here all about PV Sindhu Family…

PV Sindhu is, without a doubt, one of the most famous sportspersons in India at the moment. Yes, arguably even ahead of the likes of Virat Kohli and MS Dhoni. The shuttler is creating history and making India proud every time she enters the court. Recently, the 24-year-old became the first Indian to win the BWF World Championship at the tournament in Basel, Switzerland.

After defeating World No. 4 Nozomi Okuhara 21-7, 21-7 in an exceptionally one-sided game, Sindhu dedicated her first-ever Gold at the BWF World Championship to her mother as a birthday gift – What are the chances of playing such a massive final on your mother’s day!

Sindhu’s actions showed how much her family means to her. And why wouldn’t it? After all, Sindhu’s family has played just as big a part in her success as Pullela Gopichand. Here is everything you need to know about the Olympic silver medallist’s family:

Sports run in Sindhu’s family with both her father and mother being volleyball players. Her father, PV Ramana, has even represented India at the Asian Games.

Ramana was a part of the bronze medal-winning Indian Volleyball team at the 1986 Asian Games. For his contribution to Indian Volleyball, Ramana was awarded the Arjuna Award in 2000. He is also the former employee of Indian Railways.

Just like Sindhu’s father, her mother, P Vijaya is also a former Volleyball player and the employee of Indian Railways. Coming from the sports background, there was no lack of support for Sindhu to pursue a career in sports. In fact, her parents have played an enormous role in shaping up her career.

Sindhu decided to pursue Badminton after watching her current coach, Pullela Gopichand win the All England Badminton Championship in 2001 – She was just six years old back then. But her parents realised that their daughter can genuinely go the distance and helped her achieve her dreams.

When Gopichand opened his own academy in 2008, it was some 35 kilometres from Sindhu’s house. But her parents would wake up at 4 in the morning to prepare their daughter for the training. And this routine went on for years.

Didn’t we tell you sports runs in Pv Sindhu’s family? Just like her parents, Sindhu’s elder sister, Divya, also has a sports background. Now a successful doctor, Divya is a former national level Netball player. Although Divya’s interest in studies made her shift the focus from sports. Looking back, that actually helped Sindhu as her parents decided to focus on her badminton career after Divya’s decision to not pursue sports.

Divya is married to Sreeram Goalla, a software engineer and has a baby boy who recently turned one. Sindhu regularly shares photos and videos of her fun time with her nephew on social media platforms.

I might be a Mechanical Engineer on the paper, but I was a Sports enthusiast since childhood, screaming at the TV watching cricket at the age of 4. Not much excites me other than sports unless it's free pizza. I can watch literally anything remotely related to sports; Cricket, Football, Tennis, F1, Hockey, Athletics, Chess, you name it! And I love to write too, so at the time I'm not watching sports, I'm writing about it. Or eating pizzas, of course.
