PT Usha receives a rare award from IAAF…

Legendary Indian sprinter and Olympian PT Usha was bestowed upon with the prestigious International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) Veteran Pin Award earlier on Wednesday. Usha was conferred with the award at the 52nd IAAF conference in Doha.

Usha expressed her gratitude upon winning the IAAF honour through Tweet.

“Expressing my deep gratitude towards IAAF and President Sebastian Coe for awarding me the Veteran Pin at the 52nd IAAF conference in Doha. I look forward to continually contributing to the growth of athletics in our country!” she tweeted on Wednesday.

Usha is one of the greatest sprinters to have born in India. Often referred to as the “queen of track and field,” she won five gold medals — 100m, 200m, 400m, 400m hurdles and the 4x400m relay along with a bronze at the 1985 Asian Games in Jakarta.

Usha is also well-remembered for her spectacular performances at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics, where she missed the bronze medal in the 400m hurdles finals by a small margin of 1/100 second.

The ‘Payyoli Express’, as she is popularly known, was awarded the prestigious Arjuna Award in 1983. Two years later, Usha was awarded the Padma Shri Award in 1985.

“IAAF Veteran Pin for the long and meritorious service to the cause of World Athletics! Thank you IAAF for this incredible honour,” Usha had tweeted earlier in July, when her nomination for the IAAF honour was announced.

“It is my pleasure to invite you to participate in the award ceremony which will take place during the opening ceremony of the 52nd IAAF Congress at the Qatar National Convention Centre in Doha on eve of September 24,” she had added.

Here are the highlights of PT Usha’s illustrious career:

  • Usha has won 102 national /International medals and awards throughout her distinguished career.
  • She won 13 Gold medals in Asian Championships and a total of 33 International medals.
  • She received the prestigious Arjuna Award and Padma Shree in 1984 for showing outstanding performance in sports.
  • A year later, in 1985, Usha was adjudged as the best women athlete at the Jakarta Asian Athlete meet.
  • To add to her glory, in 1986 at the Seoul Asian Games, the Indian Olympic association awarded her with the Adidas Golden Shoe and named her the Sportsperson of the century.
