PT Usha: ‘No Question of Going Back on IOA CEO’s Appointment’

On Sunday, PT Usha, president of the Indian Olympic Association (IOA), expressed unwavering confidence in the recently appointed CEO, emphasizing that there is no reconsideration of the decision to appoint him to the top position. Earlier reports had hinted at a majority of the IOA Executive Council (EC) members endorsing a suspension order that declared the appointment of Raghuram Iyer as CEO null and void. The IOA had designated Raghuram Iyer, a former official of the Indian Premier League team Rajasthan Royals, as its Chief Executive Officer on January 6, a year after the deadline, prompted by repeated reminders from the International Olympic Committee.

However, just weeks after assuming his position, several members of the IOA EC claimed that the renowned athlete had applied “pressure” on them to facilitate Iyer’s appointment as CEO. Usha strongly refuted these allegations, labeling them as “shameful.” At that time, 12 out of 15 EC members asserted that the recruitment of Iyer had not been endorsed by the governing body.

Usha, who is the fifth recipient of the SJFI and DSJA ‘Lifetime Achievement’ award, joins the esteemed company of tennis legend Vijay Amritraj, former badminton icon Prakash Padukone, legendary cricketer Sunil Gavaskar, and former sprinter Milkha Singh. Usha, with 103 international medals for the country, boasts four gold medals and seven silver from the Asian Games and has participated in three editions of the Olympics.
