Hosts Bengaluru Raptors sealed their semifinal berth in a thrilling fashion as they summoned their neighbouring south Indian side, Chennai Smashers to a 3-2 win in the Premier Badminton League (PBL) at Sree Kanteerava Indoor Stadium on Thursday. As a result, the Smashers, who were also contending for the top 4 places, crashed out of the competition.

The tie began in Chennai’s favour, with the men’s doubles pair of Chin Chung and Chris Adcock upsetting the two-time World Championship gold medal-winning pair of Hendra Setiawan and Mohammed Ahsan by 14-15, 15-9, 15-11.

However, things went awry for the visitors from the second match onwards. They had taken a big gamble by announcing match as the contest between P Kashyap and Sai Praneeth as their Trump match. However, it turned out to be a big mistake as the World No. 22 Sai Praneeth defeated his compatriot in straight sets of 15-11 and 15-12.

He posted some very sublime smashes while showing agility in the net play. While the victory marked Praneeth’s fifth consecutive victory, it was World No.44 Kashyap’s third loss in as many games.

Having gained an advantage, Bengaluru then swiftly made sure to seal the tie with another Trump match win. It was the marquee player Srikanth Kidambi sailed past Feng Chong in the virtual decider. The World No.8 defeated the Malaysian in straight sets of 15-10, 15-10, making it six wins from six matches for him.

With a 3-0 scoreline, the rest of the matches were going to be inconsequential for both of the teams. Nonetheless, Chennai showed character by going home with both the matches, through Hyun Sung and then the Adcock couple.

The result may seem unfair for Chennai Smashers who, ironically, ended up winning more matches than their opponents. However, it was ultimately their inconsistency in the Trump matches that cost them the match – and the semi-final berth.

The Knockout stages of Premier badminton League Season 4 commence from today, with Awadhe Warriors taking on Bengaluru Raptors.
