Chennai Smashers began its 2019 PBL campaign in style by registering a solid victory over Pune 7 Aces. It was the renowned English husband-wife pair Chris and Gabby Adcock who won it for Chennai, with a Trump match win followed by another Englishman, Rajiv Ouseph defeating Brice Leverdez of France in the second match of the evening.

The two victories propelled Smashers to a comfortable lead of 3-0 in the 17th Tie of Premier Badminton League match on Thursday.

Chennai Smashers vs Pune 7 Aces

The South Indian team blew all the chances of a comeback from their opponents as their South Korean shuttler Sung Ji Hyun delivered a sucker punch in a thrilling three-game encounter against the Spaniard Carolina Marin.

The encounter was filled with plenty of thrill and drama that saw Sung Ji and Carolina go head to head fittingly knowing the importance of the match. The first game was a blockbuster with the experienced South Korean just about managing to grab the first game by a thin margin of 15-14. Having already registered a 3-0 lead, it felt as though the team in yellow had a big chance of winning the tie straight away.

However, Olympic gold-medalist Carolina had some other thoughts. She swiftly went into an 8-0 lead into the second game. Her 7-1 head-to-head record against Ji showed why she is considered one of the best shuttlers in the world. She was relentless with her smashes and showed some very skilled movement on the court. In spite of the pressure to perform, Carolina bagged the second game with an easy 15-7 win.

The third game was a do-or-die contest for both the parties involved and the match did live up to the hype with the scores tied up at 10.

Sung Ji kept stayed calm in spite of her team challenging a point and subsequently losing it. She overcame the setback and bagged the match at 13-15 before Carolina could make a return.

The following matches were inconsequential since Chennai had already won the Tie. Even though they tried their best, there was a degree of complacency evident in their play. Pune 7 Aces won the last two matches as a result of this, including a trump match.
