Over the past few years, Kidambi Srikanth of India and Tommy Sugiarto of Indonesia have been indulged in some of the most thrilling contests with the powershift being witnessed often.

However, it is Srikanth who has been dominating the fixture of late, having notched a three-game win against Sugiarto in the recent World Tour Super 750 series in China. Their career scores now rest at 3-3, signifying the competition between the two shuttlers.

Their fierce rivalry was once again the talk of the town in the second men’s singles match of Premier Badminton League when Bengaluru Raptors and Delhi Dashers lost their opening two Trump matches at ‘The Arena’ by SE TransStadia on Wednesday. It was after this intense melee that the Raptors captain, Srikanth rose to the occasion in the third games.

Both Sugiarto and Srikanth are ranked in BWF Top 10, with the first two games being apt indicators of the same. There was hardly any qualitative difference in terms of skill or style. They brought in their years of experience into play, with jump smashing and other innovative shots helping them win points.

Eventually, it was the Indian who upped the stakes by tilting the third game into his favour and with it the match to put his team ahead in the enticing Tie.

Srikanth displayed a delicious blend of powerful smash shots with contrasting soft hand skills to transform the 8-4 lead before the break into a decisive score of 15-10. The 25-year-old ended the last rally with a smash clinch the contest.

That win did manage to breathe some confidence in the Bengaluru camp, with Vu Thi Trang clinching the following tie for Raptors after scoring a hard-fought win against Chia Hsin Lee.
In the last match of the evening, a men’s doubles, Chai Biao and Maneepong Jongjit got the consolatory point for the Delhi Dashers as the pair defeated Hendra Setiawan and Mohammad Ahsan by 15-7, 11-15, 15-14.

With the result, the Bengaluru Raptors moved to the fifth position in the Premier Badminton League table. Delhi, on the other hand, continues to languish in the bottom of the table, with chances of making it to the playoffs looking extremely slim.
