PBL 4: Awadhe Warriors Win Big Against Ahmedabad Smash Masters

Beiwen Zhang, Mathias Christiansen & Lee Yang and Son Wan Ho all won their respective matches in first three games each to hand Awadhe Warriors a big 6-(-1) win over Ahmedabad Smash Masters in the PBL season 4 at ‘The Arena by SE TransStadia’ on Friday.

Beiwen who has has been representing the USA for the last five years, was a firm favourite hands down to win the first match, a Trump match, for the Warriors.

However, the route was never going to be easy since a fiercely determined Scottish shuttler, Kirsty Gilmour. She seemed reluctant on giving the Smash Masters a great and even succeeded in it by winning the first set by 15-10. The 25-year-old showed explosive energy and drive to hit winners.

However, after losing the opening game, the crafty American shrugged off the challenge by winning the second and third games by 11-15, 11-15. 25-year-old.

The second match was the error-ridden match. Beiwen, who is ranked 18 places above the Kristy, took advantage of her opponent’s glitches and soon dominated the proceedings.

After Beiwen had brought cheer to her camp, it was the South Korean shuttler, Son Wan Ho who was next in the limelight for Awadhe Warriors as he scored an exceptional win over Viktor Axelsen of Denmark. The match was bound to be an interesting affair, since their head-to-head record stood at 6-5, with the Dane enjoying the lead.

Son, who is ranked a place above his Danish opponent, outright dominated the -opening game and won it easily by 7-15. However, the second game was a different story as it was Axelsen who had the final say with his stunning smashes. He won the match by 15-8.

Unlike the first two, the third contest looked to be a much well-contested match between the two familiar opponents. However, Son, who is 7 years senior to Axelsen, tossed and pushed the shuttle deep and took aptly control of the third game. He cleverly took advantage of Dane’s mishits and eventually won the game and the match in the process.

Lee Dong Keun then concluded the one-sided Tie by a convincing 15-8, 15-12 victory over Sourabh Verma in what was Ahmedabad’s Trump Match.
