PBL 4: Delhi Dashers Earn a 4-3 Win Over Hyderabad Hunters

Thailand’s Tommy Sugiarto was the hero for the Dashers as Hyderabad Hunters lose only their second Tie

It was an inconsequential competition, with Hyderabad already qualified for the knockout stages whereas Dashers out of the same.

However, the former team would be more wary of their performances, with semi-finals fast approaching. They have thus far looked to be an unbeatable unit, dominating sides outright.

Nonetheless, except for an inspiring display from an in-form PV Sindhu, it was a poor outing for the table toppers Hyderabad Hunters against Delhi Dashers in the Premier Badminton League on Wednesday.

The Olympic -silver medalist enthralled the crowd gathered at Sree Kanteerava Indoor Stadium as she strolled past Evgeniya Kosetskaya 15-11, 15-9 with fair degree of ease. The World No. 28 Russian posted multiple attempts to elicit Sindhu forward with her drop shots, but it was the Indian’s fine coverage of the entire court that nullified her efforts.

Sindhu, ranked World No. 3, was agile in defence and clinical in her smashes.  Even though Evgeniya noteworthily stretched the proceedings, her unforced errors let her down.

Sindhu’s valiant efforts in the the trump match brought Hyderabad back in the contest at 3-2. But Delhi’s Thai shuttler Tommy Sugiarto had some others thoughts, as he sealed the fate of the contest with a straight-forward 15-6, 15-11 win over the World No. 18 Mark Caljouw.

The last match was anything but a consolation for Hyderabad as Eom Won and Rang Kim cruised past S Wang and Hsin Lee 15-7, 15-12. Kim was especially the better of the pair, as he entertained the onlookers with a wide range of shots.

The pick of them had to be the searing overhead backhand smash, the South Korean’s trademark shot. Earlier, Delhi had got a brilliant start at the hands of H.S. Prannoy who edged out Rahul Yadav 15-10, 9-15, 15-12 in an interesting men’s singles.

Later on, Awadhe Warriors trumped North East Warriors 5-0 to also confirm their presence in the Knockout stages of the Premier Badminton League Season 4. It will now be a close call between the other two top four berths with Mumbai, Bengaluru, and Chennai all in the fray.
