The Journey

Pramod Bhagat was born and brought up in the Hajipur village of the Baishali district in Bihar. He was fond of cricket in childhood. But at the age of only five years, he was severely plagued by polio and his left leg was permanently damaged. Pramod revealed,

“Some of my neighbors built up a badminton court outside my home and used to play during winter. While watching them play I became passionate about badminton and gradually started learning it. Initially, it was difficult to learn and master. But if you do not give up you must get the reward.”

Pramod’s father Kailash Bhagat was a farmer. Pramod Bhagat also had two sisters and a brother. Kailash Bhagat had to do a lot of hard work for their living. Naturally, Pramod also had to go through dire financial distress. He still remembers that he even could not buy a new racket. Rather, he had to buy a second-hand racket spending Rs 10, and go to play in state-level competition. But the struggle in his childhood has come to him as a blessing.

Pramod stated,

“I still attribute it to my early days’ financial struggle. It gave me all psychological strength, determination, and the habit of hard work. Since the beginning of my badminton career, I have never stopped practicing for a long period. You can reach the top but the most difficult is to retain the top spot and the only way to maintain consistency is a devotion which means training and training.”

But he has been mostly inspired so far by two legendary sportspersons. They are legendary Chinese badminton player Lin Dan and Sachin Tendulkar.

Pramod remembered,

“Lin Dan and a few other top international badminton players came to Lucknow in 2018 to play exhibition matches and present in a seminar following an initiative from Yonex. That time I played with Lin Dan, shaking hands with him. It was a great moment that I could play with the player whom I idolized. Then after my gold medal in Tokyo in 2020, I visited Sachin Tendulkar at his residence in Mumbai. He told me a lot of inspirational words that I will remember forever.”
