Paramjeet Kumar – From Haripur to World Para-Powerlifting Championship – Story of ‘Goal to Glory’

India received its first Para-Powerlifting medallist this Sunday in Tbilisi, Georgia. Pramjeet Kumar won the bronze medal competing in the 49 pkg category.

The gold medal went to Omar Shami Qarada of Egypt. The silver medal was won by Van Cong Le from Vietnam. Paramjeet Kumar got the bronze medal after lifting 158 kg. Whereas Omar Shami Qarda lifted 174 kg and Van Cong Le lifted 170 kg for their respective medals.

About Paramjeet Kumar

Paramjeet Kumar belongs to the Village of Haripur Khalsa which is around 22 km away from the city of Ludhiana in Punjab. This is not the first time Paramjeet Kumar has won a bronze medal for India. He had earlier won a bronze medal at the 2018 Asian Para Games which were held in Indonesia. That too had been done in the 49 kg category.

India Para Powerlifting Squad

There are ten Indians who are participating in the championship. Out of which five are in the men’s category and five are in the women’s category.


The powerlifters participating in the women’s category are. Manreet Singh (Punjab) for the 41 kg category, Sakina Khatun (Karnataka) for the 45 kg category, Raj Kumari (Delhi) for the 55 kg category, Geeta (Haryana) for the 67 kg category, and Bhawana Sharma (Rajasthan) for the 86 kg category.

In the men’s category, the participants are. Paramjeet Kumar (Punjab) for the 49 kg category, Ashok (Haryana) for the 65 kg category, Jai Deep (Haryana) for the 73 kg category, Sudhir (Haryana) for the 88 kg category, and Sachin Chaudhary (Uttar Pradesh) for the 107 kg category.
