Outdoor sports are great for anyone at any age until the health allows. But sometimes the complex rules, the equipment required, resources, etc., fall short for kids who just need to burst out with their energy. Organising outdoor games for kids that invites a bit of recklessness, low on the risk of injury, as well as an organisation while remaining fun at the same time can be really tricky. To ease the task, here are some outdoor games for kids. All of these will require almost zero planning, no safety equipment and ensure a blast for the kids. In fact, these can be explained to a 5-year-old in 5 mins, and we are ready to have fun.
1Kick the Can
A group game in which one kid has to protect a can or any solid object while other kids try to kick the can. The other kids are designated a safe area. Now the kicker must return to the secure area after kicking the can before the protector either tag him or get to the can. If the kicker could not do either, they join the protecting team.
2Steal the Bacon
Kids are divided into 2 Teams evenly, and each person is designated a unique number (less than total kids in a team). The amount given to each player is unknown to the opposite side. The 2 teams now stand behind 2 different lines in front of each other far enough to make a short run. A coveted object, generally a shoe or hanky (referred to as bacon) is placed in the middle. A number is called, and the designated player from each team has to try and get the bacon back to its side to earn a point. However, if the player is tagged in before crossing the line, the opposite team earns the point instead.
One of the kids plays as a ‘denner’. If the “denner” tags someone, they are frozen. No movements allowed to a frozen player. Only a fellow non-denner can unfreeze you. If everyone is frozen, denner wins. If a frozen kid moves or anyone gets frozen more than thrice (or whatever times), the kid is now the new denner.
As the name suggests, it is wrestling with arms. 2 kids place their elbows on a steady surface and grip each other’s hands. The task is to touch the opponent’s hand’s back on the surface. No lifting the elbow though. And no use of the other hand.
One kid is supposed to hide around while others are later tasked to search. The kid finds the hidden, is the winner.
6Duck, Duck, Goose
All the kids sit in a circle except the ‘tagger’. Tagger now walks around, touching everyone’s back while yelling ‘duck’ or ‘goose’. ‘Duck’ means relax, and ‘goose’ is game on. Whoever gets the goose is supposed to tag the tagger before he/she reaches his/her spot.
7Monkey in the Middle
Kids are standing opposite sides while one kid remains in the middle. The task is to throw the ball on the other side, without letting the monkey in the middle catch it. If he does, the thrower is the new monkey.
A ball and a wall are needed in the game. The task is to throw the ball at the wall such that it goes to the next person in line directly. If dropped, the dropper has to run to the wall and touch it. If someone else throws the ball at the wall before the kid could do so, the kid is out. Last one standing wins.
9Shark & Minnows
One of the kids plays shark while others are minnows. Shark assigns minnows to run from one place to another and try to tag as many in the process. The tagged minnows now become a shark and try to catch the rest. The last minnow remaining is the winner. Sharks have to be in a designated area while assigning the run.
2 kids are separated out as throwers while others are runners. The runners are supposed to dodge the ball and make it from one base to another. And the throwers are supposed to tag out the player by hitting them with the ball. Last runner remaining wins.
Chairs are arranged in a circle facing outward. The total number of chairs required is one less than the number of participants. One person needs to be in charge of the music. The players walk in a circle around the chairs when music is playing. As soon as the music stops, everyone has to a chair while moving the same direction. One cannot come back. The one left out is out of the game. The last one standing is the winner.
12Hide & Seek
The game is probably the most popular of all. One player is denner while others have to hide. The denner or seeker seeks the hidden players after a blind count to 10 (or whatever number). The last one sought is the winner. If an unsought player tags the denner, the game starts over with the same seeker. Else the first person sought is the new denner for the next game.
One person is in charge of the music while others have to dance to the same. As soon as the music stops, everyone has to freeze. The person in charge now tries to make them move without touching. If someone moves, he/she is out.
