There has been no updates on the wrestling trials upcoming Asian Games as the members of the IOA ad-hoc panel were unable to agree on a date for the trials on Tuesday, leaving the wrestling trials in limbo. The Indian Olympic Association has requested a delay for the trials, and the ad hoc panel is currently awaiting the OCA‘s response.

The Asian Games organizers expected the IOA to provide them with the names of every Indian athlete who would be competing by July 15, but the IOA asked for a delay to make room for the protesting wrestlers.

Six wrestlers, including gold medalist Vinesh Phogat from the Asian Games and Olympic medalists Bajrang Punia and Sakshi Malik, have asked the sports ministry for more time to get ready for the Asian Games wrestling trials.

The wrestlers claimed that the 38-day protest against WFI Chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh had left them unfit to compete.

Bhupender Bajwa stated,

“Wait for a day or two. We are hoping it (OCA reply for extension) should come in a day or two. Though we have not got any indication about the extension, we are hopeful of getting positive news by Thursday”

Gian Singh, a wrestling coach who later joined the three-person ad hoc panel, hopes that the OCA will ultimately extend the deadline.

The Dhyan Chand awardee added,

“It’s not yet confirmed, but I sense it will happen. There was a meeting today, but no decision was taken. Now another meeting will take place on July 6. It means that trials cannot be held at such short notice (before July 15). Mr. Bajwa is not saying it openly. He is saying it will happen, but he is not confirming it.”
