The ad-hoc committee for wrestling, established by the Indian Olympic Association (IOA), has announced that the national training camps for male and female athletes are set to start on February 9 in Sonepat and Patiala, respectively. This decision comes in anticipation of the upcoming Asian Olympics Qualifying and World Qualifying tournaments. The commencement of these camps is scheduled right after the conclusion of the senior National Championships in Jaipur on February 5.

The impromptu committee, led by Bhupender Singh Bajwa, the head of the Wushu Association of India, and comprising former hockey player MM Somaya and ex-badminton player Manjusha Kanwar, is making key decisions following the suspension of the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) led by Sanjay Singh, which occurred within three days of the elections, as mandated by the Sports Ministry.

The national training camp is set to choose winners in 30 weight classes encompassing senior free-style, Greco-Roman, and women’s divisions. These champions will be identified during the senior Nationals in Jaipur, an event orchestrated by the Railway Sports Promotion Board scheduled for February 2-5.

Last year, the national training camps for various age groups faced significant disruptions, primarily attributed to the protest led by prominent wrestlers in the nation. Notable figures such as Olympic medalists Bajrang Punia and Sakshi Malik, along with World Championship medalist Vinesh Phogat, spearheaded the movement against the alleged sexual harassment of female wrestlers by the former WFI president, Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh.
