National Sports Awards 2022: President Droupadi Murmu conferred Khel Ratna Award to Sharath Kamal

President Droupadi Murmu conferred Major Dhyanchand Khel Ratna Award to India’s veteran table tennis player Sharath Kamal on Wednesday at the National Sports Awards 2022 ceremony in Rashtrapati Bhawan in Delhi. Sharath Kamal was honored with India’s highest sporting award as he displayed a phenomenal performance in the Commonwealth Games 2022. Kamal won three gold medals and a silver at the Birmingham Commonwealth Games 2022, held earlier this year. He is the second Table Tennis player after Manika Batra to receive the Khel Ratna.

Apart from Sharath Kamal, 25 sportspersons were conferred with the Arjuna Award, for their excellent performance over a period of four years. Indian Boxing sensation Nikhat Zareen became the world champion in May. Lakshya Sen was the men’s singles badminton gold medallist at Commonwealth Games 2022. Boxer Amit Panghal was the 2019 world silver medallist. All of them were among the recipients of the Arjuna Award.

Apart from these, Triple jumper Eldhose Paul and steeplechaser Avinash Sable were also honored with the Arjuna Award. Eldhose Paul became the first Indian to win a CWG gold medal in the men’s triple jump. Eldhose also became the first Indian to qualify for the final of the triple jump at the World Athletics Championships. Meanwhile, Avinash Sable bagged a silver in the men’s 3000m steeplechase and smashed the Kenyan monopoly on the podium in the sport in 2022 Birmingham CWG. Moreover, Indian skipper Rohit Sharma‘s coach Dinesh Lad also received the Dronacharya Award in the lifetime category.

About the Award Ceremony

President Droupadi Murmu conferred all the awards in an official ceremony held at the Rashtrapati Bhawan in Delhi on Wednesday. The event is held on August 29 every year to commemorate the birth anniversary of legendary hockey player Major Dhyanchand. However, in 2021 and 2022, the ceremony couldn’t be held on the designated date.
