National Shooting Championship 2021 | Darshana Rathore won gold after a dramatic finale

The National Shooting Championship has returned finally after a wait of 2 years. The competition was last held in Bhopal, 2019 in the month of early December. Due to the ongoing pandemic, the competition was unable to proceed and thus, cancelled last year. The National Rifle Association of India (NRAI) announced that the competition will begin from November 18th to December 14th in Delhi, Bhopal and Patiala.

The competition couldn’t proceed in April; however, the second wave of COVID-19 proved to be a major setback. The unfavorable circumstances compelled the competition to be pout off till the end of the year. A total of 3524 players are participating in the tournament. Among 3524 participants 6 players are Arjuna Awardee recipients. The number of female athletes out of 3524 is 1301.

Darshana Rathore won the gold medal after a dramatic finale encounter against the ace shooter Ganemat Sekhon in the women’s skeet event. The Asian Silver medallist Ganemat Shekhon dominated the qualification stage with a score of 117 out of 125 available points. However, Darshana turned the tables in the final round to secure a gold medal, while Razia Dhillon won a bronze medal with 36 points in the final.

The men’s 25m rapid fire pistol event will take place in the weekend and the mixed final is scheduled for Monday. December 4th is reserved for women’s air pistol finals.

The time slot allotted for these games begin from 8:15 am to 5:00 pm.

Indian Shooting fans will expect a top-tier performance from the Indian players. After a highly successful campaign at the Junior World Champions in Lima, Peru the adrenalin rush will run high among the players as well as fans.
