Whimsical Climate

Murali Sreeshankar, the new sensation among Indian athletes, had performed in two elite tournaments, World Championship and Commonwealth Games this year with a noticeable difference. The ace long-jumper was able to jump 7.96 meters, finishing 7th in the World Athletic Championship in Oregon, USA while after a few days he finished at 8.08 meters in the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham to script history, becoming the first-ever Indian long-jumper to have clinched a silver medal.

The long jumper however could not be available as he has already resumed intense training for the preparation in forthcoming National Games, scheduled to start on 27th September in Surat.

Sreesankar’s father and coach, S. Murali revealed while talking over the phone from their residence at Palakkad,

“Sreeshankar could have jumped better in Birmingham. In his first attempt in the qualification phase, he jumped 8.08. Naturally in the final round, it could have been better. But the temperature played the spoilsport. The qualifying rounds were finished in the morning and at the time of the finals in the evening, the temperature changed drastically. It becomes extremely chilled and that was the key difficulty for most of the Indian athletes like Sreeshankar to give their best.”

Preparation for Asian Games & World Championship

Murali believes his son can jump much better than he has jumped in the Commonwealth Games. That is why Murali is looking forward to the Asian Games and World Championship next year and has set a target for Sreeshankar of 8.50 meters. Murali informed the record for the long jump at the Asian level is 8.46 meters. The coach explained,

“As Sreeshankar finished his graduation this year, we could not go to more places abroad for training and competition apart from Greece, Chula Vista in the USA this year. But in preparation for the World Championship (in August) and then Asian Games (in September), we have plans to take part in more competitions abroad and intensive training sessions there. To cope with the sudden change of temperature in any international competition, the athletes have to stay there for quite some time before the completion starts. Otherwise, it will always be difficult for Indian athletes to adjust to the change of temperature.”

According to plans, Sreeshankar who is under the scheme of TOP (Target Olympics Podium, run by Union Sports Ministry) might have training in Chula Vista in the USA. Simultaneously, the 23-year-old long jumper is likely to take part in several international competitions including Diamond Leagues.

“Sreeshankar is no exception also. Like all other present-day athletes, Sreeshankar is hugely inspired by Neeraj’s dedication, seriousness in training, and involvement. Even after having acquired such international laurels, Neeraj is so humble that it must be followed by all other athletes.”

Sreeshankar however has got a special gift from Neeraj. His father revealed,

“Before the Commonwealth Games, Neeraj had sent motivating messages to Sreeshankar several times. After Sreeshankar had won silver, he received hearty congratulatory messages also from Neeraj. In an international competition in recent times, Neeraj had even shared a room with Sreeshankar and I feel great honor in it.”

Sreeshankar who is all set to join the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) is dreaming of medals in the Paris Olympics and Neeraj Chopra’s messages are going to be his big inspiration.
