Mumbai Indians History
Many legends like Sachin Tendulkar, Sanath Jayasuriya, Ricky Ponting have been associated with this Franchise which explains the unparalleled love this team receives from their fans on social media (Mumbai Indians Twitter) as well as on stadiums.
Currently, the team is filled with power hitters like Rohit Sharma, Hardik Pandya, and Kieron Pollard. Apart from the known lot, there are many youngsters like Rahul Chahar, Jayant Yadav, and Dhawal Kulkarni ready to prove their talent out in the field.
The Initial Struggle of Mumbai Indians and Mumbai Indians Players
Mumbai Indians were touted to be one of the strongest units in the opening season of IPL, with the likes of Sachin Tendulkar (their Icon Player), Sanath Jayasuriya, Shaun Pollock, Lasith Malinga, Robin Uthappa, and Harbhajan Singh among their ranks. However, while on the one hand, the team had tonnes of experience, on the other, they lacked speed.
While much was expected from Tendulkar, the veteran Indian batsman was out injured for the most part of the season. To make matters worse his deputy, spinner Harbhajan Singh, was suspended from the tournament after slapping bowler Sreesanth in a match against Kings XI Punjab. The team ended up in the fifth position.
The 2009 edition was a similar story as MI and its players struggled with injuries and wrong player choices by the team management. They could only finish seventh in the league.

Setting the Foundation: Rise of Mumbai Indians Team
Having learned from their past mistakes, Mumbai Indians went with buying talented youngsters as they looked to rebuild their side. In the auction window, they bought Trinidad’s all-rounder Kieron Pollard for a price of $750,000 along with ten other uncapped Indian players. Ambati Rayudu, Abhishek Nayar, and Saurabh Tiwary were some of these players. Skipper Sachin Tendulkar was the star of the season for Mumbai Indians, having scored 618 runs to win the Orange Cap.
2011 was another rebuilding chance as the addition of two new teams meant that each team had to lose all but four players to the auctions. MI chose to retain Tendulkar, Pollard, Harbhajan, and Malinga for a total sum of $4.5 million.
It is during this IPL auction window that they bought Indian batsman and future skipper Rohit Sharma ($2 million) inform pacer Munaf Patel ($700,000). As a result of successful shopping, the Mumbai Indian team finished third in the points table, scalping 18 points from 14 games.
They then defeated Shahrukh Khan’s Kolkata Knight Riders in the Eliminators. However, they lost in the qualifiers against Royal Challengers Bangalore by 43 runs.
The Glory: Mumbai Indians Team
The 2013 IPL season was going to be special for MI and Mumbai Indians squad, with experienced players like Ricky Ponting and Sachin Tendulkar making way for youngsters. It was in this season that Rohit Sharma took the helm as the team’s captain. The team also had the backing of Anil Kumble and Jonty Rhodes as mentors along with Sachin Tendulkar.
After enduring a nervous start, MI team went on to win their first IPL title. They followed it up with a win in the Champions League.

The team couldn’t perform with the same rigor in the 2014 season, maybe because of the sudden change in venue (from Mumbai to UAE). Nonetheless, they made it to the last four quite dramatically on net run rate. However, they went on to lose against Chennai Super Kings in the eliminator.
MI won their second IPL trophy in 2015 after defeating nemesis Chennai Super Kings by 41 runs. Although they had started the season with four defeats, they roared back in the contest by winning 9 out of the next ten matches streak.
In 2017, a strong Mumbai Indians team finished at the top of the IPL table, notching 10 out of 14 matches. They defeated Rising Pune Supergiant by only 1 run in what was one of the best IPL matches ever played.
In 2018, the team failed to make it to the playoffs, finishing in the fifth spot.
The last two seasons, 2019 and 2020 were remarkable for MI and Mumbai Indians players. They won the champions trophy in both seasons.

Mumbai Indians Franchise
The Mumbai Franchise is owned by Reliance Industries Ltd (RIL) for $115 million, it the most expensive team to be sold in the league. Reliance Industries is owned by Mukesh Ambani who acquired the rights to the franchise for a period of 10 years. The franchise was eventually named “Mumbai Indians”.
In the year 2021, MI brand value was estimated to be $115.0 million, they topped the brand valuation chart for the third season in a row.
On-point marketing and the presence of some of the biggest names from the cricketing world have greatly contributed to this.
Mumbai Indians Sponsors
Historically speaking, Mumbai Indians have had the honor of having a number of topline companies as their sponsors. Some of the founding sponsors have been the likes of American multinational corporation MasterCard and the German apparel great Adidas. While the former was the official sponsor, the latter was the official apparel sponsor.
However, the MasterCard was replaced by UAE’s national carrier Etihad Airways, who signed a three-year contract.
Then in 2015, an in-house brand of Reliance Trends Performax took over from Adidas as the apparel sponsors.
Other major sponsors and partners include Viacom 18’s COLORS, Bridgestone, Dheeraj and East Coast LLC, Kingfisher, Wrigley’s Orbit, Wrigley’s Boomer, Royal Stag, Air India, MSN, Jet Airways, and Red FM 93.5.
Mumbai Indians Awards and Achievements
Mumbai Indians are the only IPL side to have won the title on five occasions (2013, 2015, 2017, 2019, 2020), making them the most successful outfit in the league.
Moreover, the club has also won Champions League T20 on two occasions, in 2011 and 2013.
