MS Dhoni Rested for the last two ODIs against Australia

Rishabh Pant, KL Rahul to finally get a much needed opportunity against Australia

MS Dhoni will be rested for the final two ODI’s against Australia. He had played his last ODI at his home Ranchi yesterday. As a result, the match on Friday, which India lost by 32 runs, was the wicket-keeper’s last ODI before the much awaited World Cup that will be held in England later in May.

“Dhoni will be taking a break from the ODI’s which will be played at Mohali and Delhi on March 10 and 13 respectively,” said Indian team’s assistant coach Sanjay Bangar at the post-match press conference after India’s 32 run defeat even after Captain Virat Kohli‘s magnificent century.

Youngster Rishabh Pant would finally get an opportunity to prove his worth in this Indian side before the World Cup. Pant will also keep wickets in the last two games as he is also seen as a backup wicketkeeper for the major ICC tournament.

Fast bowler Mohammad Shami might miss the Mohali ODI as he got hit on the shin in his follow through after Australian Captain Aaron Finch drove the ball straight in the fifth over of the match. Bhuvneshwar Kumar could get a chance as he is in the squad.

Indian Captain Virat Kohli and the team management went unchanged in all the three ODI’s but openers Shikhar Dhawan, Rohit Sharma, and Ambati Rayudu are going through a rough patch. It is highly likely that KL Rahul would get a spot in the final two ODI’s as he is seen as a reserved opener for the World Cup. Wrist spinner Yuzvendra Chahal has also not been picked for the first three games. He too might get an opportunity.

“There will certainly be some changes (in the team XI) because Mahi (Dhoni) is not going to play the final two matches. He is taking rest,” Bangar said. “Also, Shami got hurt today in his leg so we will need to check whether he can be fit for the day after (Mohali ODI). If he does not get fit then Bhuvneshwar Kumar could come in.”

“We will have a few changes in the next couple of games,” Kohli said. “We will have to figure out what those changes are. But the idea is still to go out there and ask the guys to put in match-winning performances and take a lot of pride in winning for the country. That mindset will not change. Yes, we’ll have a few new faces and they’ll be given chances, and they have to make the most of the chances because there’s a World Cup coming in. Everyone wants to be on that flight as well.”
