On the 6th of November 2008, at Jamtha, Nagpur stadium MS Dhoni-led India in the 4th Test match against Australia. India won the match by a mammoth score of 172 runs. Dhoni, in his debut as a captain, managed 4 catches and a stumping. Dhoni also contributed with 111 runs by scoring 50’s in both the innings. India sealed the series 2-0 and retained the Border Gavaskar trophy.

Immediately after his appointment as the Captain of the Indian team, Dhoni led India to victories against England, New Zealand, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh. India won their first-ever test series in New Zealand under Dhoni’s leadership. By the end of 2009, India ranked No 1 in ICC test rankings surpassing arch-rivals Pakistan.

During the 2005 Sri Lanka’s tour of India, in the 3rd ODI Sri Lanka had set India a tricky target of 299 runs. Sangakkara and Jayawardene added a 151 runs 3rd wicket partnership. Sangakkara slammed a century, scoring 138 runs whereas Jayawardene scored a run a ball 71. Chasing this tricky target, India lost Sachin Tendulkar’s wicket at an early score of 7 runs. Dhoni was promoted to no 3 and rest was history. With the help of 10 sixes and 15 boundaries, Dhoni went on to score a brisk knock 183 runs in 145 balls which also turned out to be the highest score by any wicket-keeper.

MS Dhoni surpassed Kumar Sangakkara’s tally of 99 stumpings in the year 2017. With 38 stumpings in test matches and 123 stumpings in ODI Dhoni has always been a threat behind the stumps. With his unorthodox methods, he has also claimed 634 catches in international cricket. Currently, MS Dhoni ranks 3rd in the list of wicket keepers with most ODI dismissals; Sangakkara and Gilchrist lead the top two positions with 501 and 472 dismissals respectively. MS Dhoni has claimed 444 dismissals in ODI cricket so far.

First Non-Australian captain to win 100 matches

Along with Allan Border and Ricky Ponting MS Dhoni is the only Captain who has won more than 100 international games. He led India in 200 international matches with 110 wins 74 losses, 5 ties and 11 no results. Dhoni courageously led India to a series wins over Australia, New Zealand, Sri Lanka, West Indies and Bangladesh.

Once with Rising Pune Supergiants and 10 times with Chennai Super Kings M.S. Dhoni has collectively led his sides 11 times to the IPL Play-Off’s, the most by any captain so far in the IPL. With an average of 42.20 after 190 IPL matches, Dhoni has scored 4432 runs for his IPL sides. Dhoni is, undoubtedly, one of the most successful cricketers in IPL History. He has affected as many as 33 stumpings in the 12 IPL editions. Dhoni has scored a mammoth 209 sixes so far; that’s highest by any Indian batsmen.

Dhoni holds an honorary Lieutenant Colonel rank in the Territorial Army unit of the Parachute Regiment. Post World Cup 2019 Dhoni took a two months sabbatical from cricket to serve his unit in Kashmir as a part of Victor Force. Dhoni’s request to train with his battalion was approved by the Indian Army in July allowing him to fulfil his dream of serving the nation and observing the soldiers closely in the most tense terrain.

In 2007-08 M.S. Dhoni has also been awarded the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna award; for his contributions and achievements in sports. In 2018 Dhoni was also awarded Padma Bhushan award which is the third-highest civilian award in India.
