One of the most visited European destination, the gorgeous St. Moritz will host the world’s first ever Ice Cricket tournament. St. Moritz Ice Cricket is a passion project, made real in the ice and snow of the famous St. Moritz. The aim of organizing such a competition is to develop cricket into a recognizable winter sports, entertainment and charity event of its own. The two day event will take place on February 9 and 10.
Ice Cricket – A First ever in history of cricket
The first ever edition of Ice Cricket will witness a great congregation of International cricketers fighting it out in the snow clad mountains. Almost all major cricket playing nations like New Zealand, Australia, South Africa, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, England and India will have their former players, participating in the two day event.
The unique two-day event is set against the serene and breathtaking backdrop of the Swiss mountains which will host two matches in two days.
The venue for the matches is an icy-cold lake (Yes you heard that right). The lake freezes into an extremely thick layer of ice, which then gets covered by the soft falling snow, enabling the lake to withstand more than 200 tons of weight. This makes it the perfect area to construct a pavilion village and grandstands to watch and support the festivities.
Ice Cricket – Former Indian Cricketers to Participate
The St. Moritz Ice Cricket tournament has already attracted many former players from various cricket playing nations. From India, the fans will get to see Virender Sehwag, Mohammed Kaif, Zaheer Khan and latest addition, Mumbaikar Ajit Agarkar.
Ice Cricket – Two teams and Congregation of former greats
Sri Lanka’s Tillakaratne Dilshan, New Zealand’s Nathan McCullum and India’s Ajit Agarkar are the latest cricketers to join a host of former stars for the inaugural St. Moritz Ice Cricket. The tournament will be held in Switzerland from February 8 and 9.
While Dilshan is the best rated Sri Lankan player in run-chases in the ODI history, McCullum and Agarkar had represented New Zealand and India in more than 150 and 200 international matches, respectively.
The two teams, Badrutt’s Palace DIAMONDS and ROYALS already have star-studded cricketers like Shahid Afridi, Virender Sehwag, Mohammad Kaif, Mahela Jayawardene, Lasith Malinga, Shoaib Akhtar, Michael Hussey, Graeme Smith, Jacques Kallis, Daniel Vettori, Nathan McCullum, Grant Elliot, Monty Panesar, Owais Shah, to name a few.
Besides the two matches, the itinerary of the two day Ice cricket event will also boast of a scenic tour of the Swiss local. This will be followed by a gala dinner where the fans will get a chance to rub shoulders with their favorite cricket personalities.
Ice Cricket – An ICC approved Tournament
Speaking to media persons, Vijay Singh, CEO, VJ Sports, “We are good to go to make history and are extremely eager to see all these amazing players to take on the challenge and give their fans a lot to cheer about. The special viewpoint is, obviously, the 22 yards offering an approach to snow as opposed to the standard soiled one.”
“We are conducting the event with approval from International Cricket Council (ICC). The St. Moritz Ice Cricket has the potential to become a flagship property for the recognizing benefactors of the diversion everywhere throughout the globe,” concluded Vijay Singh.
The historic and world-famous attraction of St. Moritz, the Badrutt’s Palace Hotel, will be sponsoring one of the teams at St. Moritz Ice Cricket. The iconic Badrutt’s Palace Hotel, will not only be branded on their kit but will also be branded in the team name.
The cricketers will make use of the traditional cricketing gear, including the red-ball, but will don sports shoes instead of spikes.
As far as Indian sports fans are concerned, they will once again get to see the fierce rivalry between top two cricketers of the world. Shoaib Akhtar versus Virender Sehwag is the clash of the titans on the ice. Let’s hope with such an event, Ice Cricket gains popularity in the football crazy Europe.
