Mousumi Murmu is already one of Bengal’s most promising female footballers. She drew the attention of the football fraternity by scoring 13 goals in the Kolkata Premier Women’s football league this season. Then Mousumi Murmu had another impressive show wearing a Bengal women’s jersey in the Khelo India Youth Women’s Football Championship held in Balaghat, Madhya Pradesh. They reached the final for the first time in the last five years before losing to Manipur. But Mousumi, playing as a striker dished out an impressive show in the competition, scoring four goals. Then the 18-year-old striker represented India in the recently-concluded AFC under-20 championship.
Mousumi Murmu: The Beginning
Mousumi hails from a remote village, Salboni in the West Midnapore district in West Bengal. Her father Sujit Murmu struggles to survive financially by doing cultivation and that too not throughout the year. The girl used to play athletics after being fascinated by her mother Arati Murmu who also played athletics at the district level. Later, buoyed by her elder brother Subrata Murmu, Mousumi shifted to football from athletics and started learning the basics of the game from a dedicated local coach Narayan Singh along with her elder brother. Later she practiced at a club named Salboni Jagoron. Mousumi said,
“But playing with older boys under the tutelage of Narayan Singh I developed strength, endurance, and stamina which helped me when I started playing with the girls.”
Mousumi came to Kolkata from Salboni in 2017 and was signed by Police Club. She played all the matches for Police in the women’s football league and got appreciation from the coaches and Kolkata clubs. In its aftermath, the striker was signed by East Bengal for its women’s football team a couple of years ago.
Mousumi, commenting on the development of her game said,
“I am still improving. I am learning a lot under the tutelage of former India international player and coach of East Bengal as well as the present senior women’s Bengal team- Sujata Kar. It has become easy for me to grasp the technique of the game, especially of a striker as Sujata madam was also a successful striker in her time. My speed and scoring ability within the box has improved more than before. I will have to improve in off-the-ball movement.”
Simultaneously, Mousumi was praised by the under-20 national women’s team coach Maymol Rockey during her stint with the national team,
“The coach also had an appreciation for my sincerity and effort on the field. She especially pointed out my speed down the flanks and advised me to improve it more.”
Fascination for Neymar
Mousumi is a die-hard fan of Brazilian star Neymar Da Silva. Commenting on her fascination for the star she stated,
“I often watch training videos of Neymar whenever I get time. Not only that, but I also try to apply his dribbling style and off-the-mark speed in my training.”
Mousumi Murmu’s Desire
Mousumi has the desire of representing the senior Indian women’s team. But more than that, the striker seems desperate to place herself as a professional footballer so that she can earn some admirable amount of money. She said,
“We still live in a mud house. I have the desire to reconstruct it and make it a concrete building.
