India’s prominent fast bowler, Mohammed Shami, sidelined from competitive cricket since the World Cup finals due to injury, underwent Achilles tendon surgery in London on Monday. The 33-year-old, a key player across all formats for the national team, is set to miss IPL 2024, and his involvement in the T20 World Cup in the USA and the Caribbean seems unlikely. Reports indicate that Shami sought specialized advice in London following a recommendation for surgery from the NCA Bengaluru. Mohammed Shami shared this update on social media, indicating that the recovery process will require a certain amount of time:

“Looking forward to getting back on my feet.”

During his absence from the Indian team, he was not part of the T20I series against Australia, missed another series against Afghanistan, skipped an all-format series against South Africa, and is currently absent from the Test series against England.

Shami has been absent from cricket action since the conclusion of India’s World Cup 2023 final held at the Narendra Modi Stadium on November 19. He was unavailable for the T20I series against Australia and the subsequent tour of South Africa. India has felt the void of Shami’s contributions in the ongoing 5-match Test series against England, captained by Ben Stokes. During his absence, players such as Mukesh Kumar and Akash Deep have been given opportunities. Despite expressing his desire to return for the series against England in January, Shami has faced setbacks in his recovery journey.
