The 10th edition of the Indian Super League (ISL 2023-24) is scheduled to commence on September 21, 2023, featuring an exciting Southern Derby between Kerala Blasters FC and Bengaluru FC. The inaugural match of this fresh season in the country’s premier domestic league will take place at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Kochi.
Notably, this opening clash is a rematch of last season’s semifinal, which gained notoriety for the KBFC walk-off incident. This incident ultimately granted Bengaluru FC a walkover victory and a direct path to the finals in the previous edition of the tournament.
KBFC coach Ivan Vukomanovic instructed his squad to exit the field in response to a contentious goal by Sunil Chhetri, which Vukomanovic believed was taken prematurely based on the referee’s decision. As a result of his actions, the Serbian coach has been subjected to disciplinary measures, including a suspension from coaching for ten matches.
The current titleholders, Mohun Bagan Super Giant, are emerging as the team to watch out for, particularly following their recent victory in the Durand Cup. Their strengthened roster now includes top-notch foreign talents like Jason Cummings and Armando Sadiku, in addition to the proven abilities of Indian players like Anwar Ali, Anirudh Thapa, and Sahal Abdul Samad.
Juan Ferrando aims to maintain his impressive performance as the new season kicks off, while Des Buckingham, the head coach of Mumbai City FC, seeks to build upon his outstanding previous season. Buckingham, the Englishman in charge of the Islanders for another year, is determined to secure the championship this time around and add some silverware to his accolades.
Chennaiyiin FC has renewed its collaboration with English coach Owen Coyle, aiming to kick off the season positively and build on that momentum going forward.
