The light-welterweight boxer, Manish Kaushik (63 kg) won gold medal at the 35th Boxam International Tournament in Castellon, Spain, Saturday. It was a perfect return to the rings for the 25-year-old boxer, after a year. Kaushik beat Nikolai Terteryan of Denmark in the final.

“I won against renowned boxers like Safiullin Zakir (current world no. 4) and many other European boxers in Spain. These victories have made me confident. Now I am in a perfect mental shape ahead of the Tokyo Olympics,” Kaushik said.

Battling Hardships

Manish Kaushik was physically ready for the training, after the surgery on his right bicep. But he was struggling with mental barriers. His coaches CA Kuttappa and Santiago Nieva could sense the fear in his game. They sat-down with the 25-year-old boxer which helped him recover mentally.

“Due to my injury I was nervous for the international tournaments. I had a fear of injuring the bicep again” says the 25-year-old. “But once the coaches, and I realized that I was playing my game naturally, I had to just execute the plans in Spain.”

Last year, Kaushik became the ninth Indian boxer to qualify for the Olympics. He defeated CWG champion Harrison Garside of Australia at Jordan to secure the Olympic ticket. During the match, the boxer from Haryana suffered a right bicep injury. He got hit from Garside’s elbow.

After three months, Kaushik was diagnosed with bicep tear, in Mumbai by Dr Dinshaw Pardiwala. He recommended immediate surgery. After a few weeks, Kaushik was shifted to Army Sports Institute (ASI) at Pune, where he underwent rehabilitation. ASI staff, Olympic Gold Quest (OGQ) and Sports Authority of India monitored the rehabilitation.

Coach Jai Singh Patil

Prominent Indian national boxing coach Subedar Jai Singh Patil trained the 25-year-old Mansih Kaushik at the ASI Pune.

While all the other national boxers train in Patiala or Bellary, coach Patil made sure that Kaushik remained motivated under a strict lockdown in Pune.

“I did not meet my family even once during the lockdown. I stayed with Manish so that the boy didn’t have to stay alone,” says Patil. “We made him watch motivational and inspiring movies, gave several books on life of Muhammad Ali and talk about his previous bouts. We knew that the boy could not spar, so, we made him punch a Swiss ball against my stomach.”

Boxam International

In Spain, Kaushik registered wins over world number four Kazakh Safiullin Zakir, in the second round. In the finals, he beat Nikolai Terteryan of Denmark.
