The un-official sports capital of India, Manipur from where India gets most of its sportspersons and medal winners will now have the nations’ first Sports University. This move will surely benefit the up and coming athletes from all over the North Eastern part of India.
Modi Government approves Manipur Sports University
The Union Cabinet approved an ordinance to set up the country’s first national sports university in Manipur.
Speaking to reporters on the decisions of the Cabinet, Law Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad said a bill to set up the university in Imphal (west) is already pending in Parliament. He said that things will start moving fast once the President signs the ordinance.
The Manipur government has already allocated land for the proposed university, he said, while the ordinance will be on the lines of the bill introduced in Lok Sabha in August, 2017.
As of now, there are some institutes which offer various courses for athletes and coaches. But the reach and knowledge they provide is not sufficient for a big nation like India. More such institutes need to come up in various parts of the country.
“A void exists in the sports environment of the country in various areas such as sports science, sports technology, high performance training,” the bill stated.
The proposed university is expected to bridge this gap. The proposal to set up the national sports university in Manipur was initially announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, while Rs 100 crore funds for it were allocated in the 2014-15 budget.
Well, at last something concrete to build a sporting culture in India is being though off and done. At KreedOn we as Indian sports promoters and fans hope all this development for sports and infrastructure takes shape quickly and the dream of becoming a sports super-power becomes a reality.
