Manika Batra is one of the most successful table tennis players the country has ever produced. Having always shown her pedigree at the highest level, the 24-year-old has always been at the top of her game. In fact, she had a big role to play in India’s table tennis revolution. Manika Batra also had a crucial role to play in 2018 which proved to be one of the best in Indian TT’s modern history. It all started with Manika Batra three historic medals at the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games. The first medal – a gold – came in the women’s team event followed by a silver in the women’s doubles event. However, by defeating Singapore’s Mengyu Yu 4-0, Batra became the first Indian to win a gold in the CWG Women’s singles event.

She followed it up with another great outing at the 2018 Jakarta Asian Games. Teaming up with Sharath Kamal, the 23-year-old managed to stun the North Korean pair of Cha Hyo Sim and An Ji Song in the quarter-finals to ensure a bronze. With that, Batra also became the first Indian woman athlete to win an Asiad medal. As of now, she is ranked at 48 in the ITTF world rankings.

Born on 15th June 1995 in Delhi, she was the youngest of three children. She started playing TT at the age of 4. Her life was not easy as a kid as she switched many schools for better training opportunities and finally ended at Hansraj Model School. She won a state-level tournament in the under 8 category. After that, she decided to be trained under Coach Sandeep Gupta. Eventually, she became the best player in Delhi and then in state-level matches. Later she got through Jesus and Mary College but she hardly attended college. she was always engaged in training and traveling so she dropped out of JMC and had gone for correspondence in BA program to DU. She even got modeling proposals which she gave up for focusing on Table Tennis. Many people even advised her to quit the game and opt for modeling but she continued chasing her dream.

Manika table tennis journey started playing at the age of 4, Manika hails from Delhi, India. She was inspired by her sister, Anchal, and brother, Sahil who used to play table tennis. Manika is an admirer of Russian tennis player Maria Sharapova. She loves dancing and loves the song Despacito. She was offered many modeling offers at a very young age. Batra declined a scholarship from the Peter Karlsson Academy in Sweden. She dropped out of college after a year to focus on her career in table tennis.

Her first achievement came in when she was only 8 as she won the under-8 state-level tournament and since then she hasn’t stopped. She started taking professional training under the coach, Sandeep Gupta who played an important role in polishing her skills and talent. Interestingly, her pre-game ritual is as simple as listening to music.

Manika was born to Girish Batra and Sushma Batra on 15th June 1995 in Delhi. She is the youngest child. She has an elder sister, Anchal, and a brother Sahil. Her father Girish Batra has always his daughter all through her journey till now.

Her mother, Sushma is her role model. Her way of unwinding after an intense match is usually by going out for a movie with her mom or shopping.

Manika Batra Achievements

  • In 2011, Manika won a silver medal in the under-21 category of the Chile Open.
  • The year 2015 proved to be too good for Batra as she clenched 3 medals at the Commonwealth Table tennis Championships which included 2 Silvers (Women’s team and Women’s doubles event) and 1 bronze in the Women’s singles event.
  • At the 2016 South Asian Games, she won a gold each in the women’s doubles, mixed doubles, and women’s team event each.
  • In the 2018 Commonwealth Games held in Australia, Manika Batra led the Indian women’s team to a win which was historic, defeating the defending champions Singapore women’s team who never lost since the sport was included in the Commonwealth Games.
  • In the same event, Batra along with Mouma Das won a silver in the women’s doubles category.
  • Commonwealth 2018 will always be memorable for Manika as she created history by becoming the first Indian woman to win an individual medal (GOLD) in table tennis at the CWG 2018.
  • She won a bronze in the mixed doubles category with Achanta Sharath Kamal at the Asian Games 2018.
  • Qualified for Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.
