“Manchestar ab Rainchester Hoga!” Fans react as Rain spoil #INDvsNZ

The weather Gods again played the spoil sport as the World Cup 2019 Semi final between India and New Zealand was called off owing to incessant rain. As a result, the game has been pushed to the reserve day on 10th of July.

The play was stopped in the 47th over in what was a unanimous decision by the umpires. Whatever be the case, it will the Men in Blue colours that will be the happier of the two sides returning on Wednesday. Having been asked to bowl first on a ground that has seen the five recent games won by the team batting first, it was going to be important for Team India to stop New Zealand from scoring a big total. And they did exactly that. Well, at least until the 47th over.

Virat Kohli went with Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Ravindra Jadeja in place of Mohammad Shami and Kuldeep Yadav to increase the team’s batting depth in case the opposition put a big total. However, the move didn’t take its toll on the team’s bowling, with India’s bowlers wrecking havoc yet again.

Jasprit Bumrah started the run of events, sending Martin Guptill for a measly 1 run in the fourth over. Jadeja then struck to dismiss the other opener, Nicholls. The two incoming batsmen Ross Taylor (67*) and Kane Williamson (67) stuck to the crease to build a strong partnership.

But the downside of that – the run-rate took a beating. The skipper looked destined to play a big innings but for an unfortunate edge courtesy of Yuzvendra Chahal’s juicy turning delivery. The run-rate again slowed down as a result. By the time Taylor had started hitting the ball out of the park, the rain disrupted the play. The game was at last postponed to the reserve day with New Zealand standing at 211/5.
