Dubai to host historic 17th Indian Premier League (IPL) auction in 2024, featuring first-ever female auctioneer Mallika Sagar. Sagar, known for her role in the Women’s Premier League, replaces Hugh Edmeades for this significant event. Her appointment signifies a momentous milestone in IPL history, highlighting inclusivity and diversity in cricket. Sagar, a renowned auctioneer from Pundole’s in Mumbai, brings her expertise beyond the art world, having started her career at Christie’s in 2001 as the first Indian-origin woman auctioneer.
Although Mallika Sagar made her cricket auctioneering debut at the last WPL auction, she is not new to sports auctions. In 2021, she gained attention as the auctioneer for the Pro Kabaddi League, breaking stereotypes as the first woman to lead the league’s auctions. Now, she is venturing into new territory by taking over as the auctioneer for a men’s tournament, replacing Edmeades. Her successful performance at the WPL auction received acclaim, paving the way for her groundbreaking role in a men’s cricket event.
