Malaysia Masters 2019: Saina, Srikanth Enters the Second Round

Indian badminton stars Saina Nehwal and Kidambi Srikanth have started the Malaysian Masters 2019 on a winning note.

Saina Nehwal defeated Deng Joy Xuan of Hong Kong 14-21, 21-18, 21-18 to move into the second round of the women’s singles event. Nehwal looked a bit uneasy at the start but bounced back later to go further in the tournament.

Nehwal has been one of the top achievers in 2018, claiming a second gold in the CWG and securing bronze at the Asian Games and Asian Championship.

 

Kidambi Srikanth beat Hong Kong’s Angus Ng Ka Long 21-17, 21-11 to advance further in the men’s singles event of the tournament. The world number 8 had an easy game as he dominated the sets from start to end.

Earlier,  on Tuesday, another shuttler Parupalli Kashyap entered the second round of the Malaysia Masters 2019 after defeating Rasmus Gemke of Denmark 19-21, 21-19, 21-10 in a thrilling contest.

Parupalli then also entered the main draw of the Malaysia Masters 2019 after defeating Vladimir Malkov of Russia 21-12 21-17 in straight games in the men’s singles qualification round on Tuesday itself.

Other important games of the day

In mixed-doubles event, the Indian pair of Pranaav Chopra and N. Sikki Reddy defeated Dutch pair of Robin Tabeling and Selena Piek 21-19, 21-17 and moved into the second round of the competition.

On the other hand, Subhankar Dey lost 18-21, 13-21 to Tanongsak Saensomboonsuk of Thailand in another men’s singles qualification match.

Rituparna Das and Mughda Agrey too did not qualify. Rituparna lost 13-21, 24-26 to Indonesia’s Ruselli Hartawan while Mugdha was defeated 17-21, 21-18, 19-21 by Switzerland’s Sabrina Jaquet.

Olympic silver medalist PV Sindhu has opted out of the tournament.
