Mahavir’s Journey

Mahavir Singh Phogat was born in the Balali village of Haryana’s Bhiwani district. His father Maan Singh was a farmer while his mother was a housewife. Mahavir had five brothers. Vinesh and Priyanka are the daughters of his youngest brother, Rajpal.

Mahavir’s first love was kabaddi and not wrestling. Till class five, Mahavir Phogat was also good at academics but his interest in studies slowly waned with time and sports took center stage.

A star raider for his school teams in district-level tournaments, Mahavir Singh Phogat was popular in his neighborhood for his prowess in kabaddi. But he did not continue his study and then he took up wrestling seriously and started taking part in dangals, locally-arranged village and district competitions popular in north India where wrestlers can win money for winning bouts.

Mahavir was aroused by Karnam Maleswari‘s bronze in Sydney Olympics followed by the Haryana government’s Rs 1 crore cash incentive to Maleswari. Then he started coaching seriously.

On Wrestlers’ Movement

The wrestlers led by Vinesh Phogat, Sakshi Malik, and Bajrang Punia are agitating for the resignation of WFI president Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh for over a month. The president is alleged to have sexually assaulted the female wrestlers.

Mahavir is extremely angry with the Wrestling Federation of India’s president Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh. He said,

“I have known Brij Bhushan for a long time. I know how corrupt he is. I have heard that representatives from the World Wrestling body will be coming to India and organizing the election of United World Wrestling (UWW) is going to appoint an observer to conduct the WFI election. I want any former international wrestler to come forward and contest for the president’s post. Unless former wrestlers get into administration, WFI will not change.”

Mahavir who is also active with the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) Haryana branch revealed that he is ashamed of being with the same party where a man like Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh is associated.
