Maharashtra has a Field Day at Khelo Games – Win Weightlifting and Kho Kho Gold

Team Maharashtra consisting of both under 17 boys and girls won the Kho Kho Gold, thereby completing a golden double at the first Khelo Indian School Games.

Kho Kho Gold – How did the teams perform?

In the kho kho gold medal match, the Maharashtra girls overcame Gujarat by a narrow one point win with a score line of 7-6. The winning point came when just five minutes were remaining. The Maharashtra Boys also won by one point with a score line of 11-10. The winning point in match came with seven minutes to spare, thus making them the first team to win Kho Kho golds at Khelo India School Games

Winning the toss the Maharashtra girls chose to defend as expected. They defended well and opened a handy lead in the sessions at 5-3 over Gujarat. When it was time for them to defend, Gujarat again managed three points, while Maharashtra grabbed two after being locked 6-all. The winning point came with five minutes spare.

In boy’s finals Maharashtra once again won the toss, they preferred to defend first. Maharashtra won 10 points as against four by Kerala. When Kerala were defending, they were kept down to six, and as Maharashtra won the 11th point for the gold, there were still seven minutes to go.

Earlier in semi-finals, Maharashtra girls beat Delhi 16-11, while Gujarat beat Karnataka 10-8. Delhi and Karnataka took the bronze medals.

In the Boys semis, Kerala beat Andhra 19-11 and Maharashtra beat Karnataka 12-9. Andhra and Karnataka got the bronze medals for Boys.

After Kho Kho Gold – Maharashtra wins weightlifting Gold as well

Maharashtra’s Achinta Sheuli hardly broke a sweat on his way to win the weightlifting gold medal in the boys’ 77kg class at the Khelo India School Games. Sheuli snatched 134kg and picked up 158kg in the clean & jerk for a combined lift of 292kg for the first place. He was a massive 61 kg better in terms of combined lifts.

While the four gold medals on offer during the day were split between Maharashtra, Punjab, Telangana and Manpur, it was Maharashtra who picked the most. Maharashtra also won two silver and one bronze. Overall Maharashtra has picked three gold, eight silver and seven bronze in weightlifting. However, in terms of gold medals, Manipur have four gold and one silver. Telangana have also made their presence felt with two gold.

As Sheuli won the gold, Maharashtra also won the silver as Pritam Chitvan lifted a combined weight of 231kg to take the second place. It was considerably lower than the much superior Achinta Sheuli, who has two silver medals in the last two senior national competitions. Nandan Sahu of Odisha came third with a 209kg combined effort for the bronze.

77kg: 1. Achinta Sheuli (Maharashtra) snatch 134kg, clean & jerk 1158kg, total 292kg; 2. Pritam Chavan (Maharashtra) 100kg, 131kg, total 231kg;3. Nandan Sahu (Odisha) 94kg, 115kg, total 209kg

85kg: 1. H Karthik (Telangana) snatch 111kg, clean & jerk 139kg, total 250kg; 2. Soubam Arbind Singh (Manipur) 110kg, 135kg, total 245kg, ;3. Popin Janya (Uttar Pradesh) 106kg, 134kg, total 240kg.

94kg: 1. Jasveer Singh (Punjab) snatch 105kg, clean & jerk 134kg, total 239kg; 2. Tejas Lokhande (Maharashtra) 103kg, 128kg, total 231kg;3. Nabam Tat (Arunachal Pradesh) 95kg, 130kg, total 225kg.


69kg: 1. Warepam Sapana Devi (Manipur) snatch 70kg, clean & jerk 90kg, total 160kg; 2. Palati Dhathri (Andhra Pradesh) 65kg, 80kg, total 145kg; 3. Shreya Ganamukhi (Maharashtra) 58kg, 70kg, total 128kg
