Indian tennis player, Niki Poonacha secured an impressive victory over the top-seeded Sumit Nagal, his fellow countryman, advancing to the quarterfinals of the ATP Challenger 100 tournament on Thursday. Participating in the event as a wildcard alongside Sasikumar Mukund, Poonacha triumphed over the highly regarded Nagal with a score of 6-4, 6-3, in a match that extended for over one hour and nine minutes. Initially trailing 4-2 in the first set, Poonacha rallied back, equalizing the scores and ultimately achieving a noteworthy win, marking his inaugural quarterfinal appearance at this level.

In the upcoming quarterfinal match, Niki Poonacha, who recently made his debut in India’s Davis Cup fixture against Pakistan in Islamabad, is set to face the seventh-seeded Dave Sweeny from Australia. Sweeny secured his spot in the quarterfinals by defeating Maks Kasinowski of Poland with a scoreline of 6-4, 6-1. Meanwhile, in another singles encounter, Ramanathan suffered a defeat at the hands of Russia’s Alexey Zakharov, who won 6-4, 6-4 in a match lasting one hour and 27 minutes. Zakharov is now scheduled to compete against Ajdukovic in the quarterfinals, as Ajdukovic emerged victorious against Tristan Boyer from the USA with a convincing score of 6-1, 6-2.

Indian doubles pairs continued their impressive performance, securing places in the men’s doubles semi-finals. Arjun Kadhe and Jeevan Nedunchezhiyan clinched a 6-4, 7-6 victory against Jakob Schnaitter and Mark Wallner from Germany, earning them a spot in the final four. Meanwhile, Ramkumar Ramanathan and Saketh Myneni, fresh from recent title victories in the Challengers at Chennai and Bengaluru, extended their winning streak to 10 consecutive matches. They triumphed with a 6-2, 6-7(4), 10-2 result over Duje Ajdukovic from Croatia and Enrico Dalla Valle from Italy.
