After having a stunning start to the 2019 Indian Premier League (IPL) season, Kolkata Knight Riders went into a disappointing slump that saw them slip from the first spot to a dismal seventh. However, the team pushed in the end and rose to the fifth spot, missing the playoff spot only on inferior run-rate.

Determined to change things this time out, the KKR management released as many as 10 players including Joe Denly, Yarra Prithviraj, Robin Uthappa, Chris Lynn, Piyush Chawla, Matthew Kelly, Shrikant Mundhe, Nikhil Naik, KC Cariappa, and Carlos Brathwaite.
