Volleyball’s popularity in India made it only when the sport earn a permanent spot in the South Asian Federation Games (SAF) in Kolkata in 1987. The Indian volleyball team won the gold medal in the Colombo Games in 1991.

Palaniswamy (1961), Nrijit Singh (1962), Balwant Singh (1972), G Malini Reddy (1973), Shyamsundar Rao (1974), Ranvir Singh and K. C Elamma (1975), Jimmy George (1976), and many others are among the famous volleyball players in India who have received the coveted Arjun Awards. Jimmy George, one of India’s greatest volleyball players, was ranked among the world’s top 10 players. He is the most famous volleyball player of India.

When it comes to Indian volleyball, Jimmy George is often regarded as one of the most famous volleyball players of India & of all time. He was born on March 8, 1955, in Peravoor, and died on November 30, 1987. He was a part of the Men’s Volleyball National Team. George made history by being the first Indian volleyball player to play professionally, and he represented an Italian professional volleyball team.

Jimmy was a member of India’s national volleyball squad in the Asian Games in Tehran (1974), Bangkok (1978), and Seoul (1986), when India won bronze. In 1986, he guided the Indian team to victory in the India Gold Cup International Volleyball Tournament in Hyderabad.

Palinasamy was a volleyball player from the Tamil Nadu state in India. On November 12th, 2007, he passed away. In the early 1960s, Palinasamy was a member of the national volleyball squad that competed in the Asian Games. Because of the intensity with which he moved on the court, especially at the 1962 Asian Games in Jakarta, he was dubbed Black Panther. In 1962, he was also awarded Asia’s best player. Palinasamy was the first player in this sports category to earn the Arjuna Award. After coaching the Sivaganga District in Tamil Nadu, he withdrew from volleyball in 1998.

 He is one of the most well-known volleyball players from Kerala. He has competed for India in several national and international competitions, including the 1986 Asian Games in Seoul, when he captained the Indian team to a bronze medal. In the 1980s volleyball team, his partnership with Jimmy George made them a force to be reckoned with, as they both played for the country. In 1986, he received the Arjuna Award for his services to Indian volleyball.

 Ballu is his more well-known moniker. Sagwal was a key member of the Indian Men’s Volleyball Team. He was born into a humble family in the hamlet of Kaul in Haryana. Sagwal had joined the Border Security Force, which was known for producing some of the greatest volleyball players in the country at the time. In the 1960s and 1970s, he was a key figure in helping Punjab win national volleyball competitions. In 1972, Sagwal received the Arjuna Award for his contributions to volleyball. Sagwal died in November 2010, but via his volleyball academy in Kaul, he has left a volleyball legacy.

In the Asian Games in Bangkok (1966) and Jakarta (1962), Riaz was a member of India’s national volleyball team, which finished fourth and earned a silver medal. He was a senior member of the Indian squad who influenced outstanding players such as Jimmy George, who competed in the Asian Games in Tehran (1974), Bangkok (1978), and Seoul (1986), winning the bronze medal for India. In 1985, he captained the Indian squad in Saudi Arabia, and in 1986, he led the team to victory in the India Gold Cup International Volleyball Tournament in Hyderabad.

He is the current head coach of India’s male’s national volleyball team and was formerly the coach of the Tamil Nadu volleyball team. Sridharan is among the effective coaches that helped Indian youth volleyball reach new heights by winning a gold medal in the Asian Volleyball Championship. He received the Dronacharya Award in 2008, who many people believe arrived too late in his life, given his long list of accomplishments.

Nirmal Kaur

Nirmal Milkha Singh, also known as Nirmal Kaur, was the captain of the Indian Women’s Volleyball Team. She was the mother of Jeev Milkha Singh and the wife of athlete Milkha Singh. She passed away recently due to Covid-19.
