Athletics is one of the most popular sports at the Asian Games. It has been contested at every edition of the games since the inaugural event in 1951. The athletics events at the Asian Games are divided into four distinct groups. These include the following: track events (including sprints, middle- and long-distance running, hurdling and relays), field events (including javelin, discus, hammer, pole vault, long and triple jumps), road events and combined events (the heptathlon and decathlon).
