Leander Paes, a multiple Grand Slam champion, achieved the distinction on Tuesday of being the inaugural Asian male nominee for the International Tennis Hall of Fame (ITHF) in the player category. At the age of 50, Paes was unveiled as one of the six candidates for the Class of 2024.

He will compete for this honor alongside Cara Black, Ana Ivanovic, Carlos Moya, Daniel Nestor, and Flavia Pennetta in the Player Category. Back in 2019, Li Na, the Chinese tennis star who secured the women’s singles titles at the Australian Open and French Open, marked history by becoming the first Asian player ever to receive a nomination to the ITHF.

Paes has clinched victory in 18 Grand Slam championships across the realms of doubles and mixed doubles, alongside securing a prior world No. 1 ranking in doubles. Over the course of his remarkable three-decade-long career, he claimed eight Grand Slam titles in doubles, ten in mixed doubles.

Reflecting on his journey, Paes expressed his gratitude to the sport of tennis, saying,

“Tennis has given me so much, and I hope this nomination inspires every young kid around the world that with passion in your heart, hard work and belief in yourself, you too can become a champion,”

Paes accumulated 462 weeks within the ATP doubles’ top 10 rankings, with 37 of those weeks at the number one spot.
