IPL 2024 is just a few months away from all the cricket fans. There are always a lot of things to enjoy in the entire league, but the batsmen hitting sixes is something that viewers want to see most often, but it becomes more interesting and joyful when a batter hits a six to win on the last ball of the match. In this article, we have listed the occasions when players pocketed victory by hitting six at the last ball of the match.
Players Who Won the Match with Six in IPL
Rinku Singh against GT (IPL 2023)
In IPL 2023, the match between the Gujarat Titans and KKR was more than a magical match because there was total drama throughout the match. The real drama came when young left-hander Rinku Singh struck five sixes in the last over of Yash Dayal, and the fifth six was on the last ball of the match to secure a victory for his team.
The match was totally in the control of the Gujarat Titans, but Rinku Singh had different intentions, and he did magic with his bat to win the impossible-looking match for his team by hitting six on the last ball.
Rahul Tewatia against PBKS (IPL 2022)
Just like Jadeja did back in IPL 2020 for CSK, Rahul Tewatia didn’t just hit the last ball of this IPL match for a six, but he also smashed the last two deliveries of Odean Smith’s 20th over for sixes! He helped Gujarat Titans manage to score 19 runs off the final over, securing their third IPL victory in a thrilling manner.
Srikar Bharat against DC (IPL 2021)
In the final ball of an IPL match, which also marked the end of the round-robin stage, a crucial six was hit. If RCB had won, they could have secured second place and an easier path to the final. However, Virat Kohli‘s decision to field first put an end to those hopes, as RCB struggled at 55 for 3 while chasing DC’s 164.
Initially, it seemed like the game would end uneventfully. Despite DC already securing the top spot, they missed chances, allowing Srikar Bharat and Glenn Maxwell to revive RCB’s innings. With 19 runs needed off 12 balls, Nortje bowled a tight over. Maxwell managed a boundary off the first ball of the final over, but RCB struggled to score off the next few deliveries.
Requiring 8 runs off 2 balls, a misfield by DC allowed RCB to grab a couple. With six needed off the last ball, Avesh Khan‘s wife delivery and subsequent full toss was punished by Bharat, who smashed it for a six over long-on, securing a thrilling win for RCB.
Ravindra Jadeja against KKR (IPL 2020)
Why settle for hitting just the last ball of an IPL match for a six when you can hit the last two balls to win it? That’s exactly what Ravindra Jadeja did in this game. It’s unfortunate that, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, no fans were there to witness this exciting finish. CSK needed 10 runs off the final over but managed only 3 from the first 4 balls. Then Ravindra Jadeja took the charge, smashing two massive sixes to seal the victory in his trademark flamboyant manner.
Nicholas Pooran against RCB (IPL 2020)
This game appeared to be headed toward a very straightforward victory for KXIP, who needed just two runs to win from the final over, with Chris Gayle and KL Rahul both at the crease and set. But after Gayle was run out in the match’s penultimate delivery after just one ball off the first four, Nicholas Pooran entered the middle of the pitch, putting ten times more pressure on the opposition.
Never one to back down, Pooran struck his first ball and, eventually, the final ball of the game for six runs to complete this IPL 2020 victory.
Mitchell Santner against RR (IPL 2019)
Just like 2016, when he faced four consecutive sixes in the World T20 final, Stokes found himself in a similar situation in this epic IPL match. This time, it was Mitch Santner who smashed the final ball for six to clinch victory. In a nail-biting last over, CSK needed 18 runs to win.
Ravindra Jadeja kicked off the drama with a six off the first ball, reducing the target to 12 from 5 balls. At the end Santner remained composed, scoring the required 8 runs from the final 3 balls, including the crucial six off the last ball to seal the match.
MS Dhoni against KXIP (IPL 2016)
After narrowly missing out a couple of times, MS Dhoni finally made his mark on the list of six hitters to win an IPL match for Rising Pune in 2016, and it was definitely worth the wait! With 22 needed off the last five balls, Dhoni smashed two sixes and a four, sealing an incredible victory.
It wouldn’t feel right to talk about IPL match-winning sixes without mentioning one of the greatest finishers in cricket history.
Dwayne Bravo against KKR (IPL 2012)
In the Indian Premier League (2012), batsmen’s last-ball sixes to win games were legendary. But around the halfway mark of the game, you would have gotten some very high odds on it getting all the way to the last ball, much less hitting that ball for a six to win.
After 10 overs, CSK was coasting along at 96 all without losing, but the runs dried up as they lost both openers in three balls. They were still the favorites, requiring nine off the last over, until MS Dhoni was out, leaving the visitors needing eight from four balls. Dwayne Bravo‘s shot reduced that equation to 5 from 2, and although he missed his initial effort to send the ball into the stands, he blasted the final ball of the game for six to give CSK the victory.
