Konkana Sardar is a 16-year-old girl from a place named Basirhat, West Bengal. Konkana drew the attention of the country’s athletics fraternity by jumping 5.42 meters long to ensure a silver medal in the Under-16 age group in the Junior National Championship held in Assam in 2022. Further, in the Indo-Bangladesh Games, Konkana acquired a bronze medal in the same event in her age group.
The Beginning of Konkana Sardar
Konkana Sardar hails from a family where her father runs a small fast-food shop. In her childhood, she watched one of her cousin sisters running on the nearby ground and Konkana also took up running. Further, Konkana Sardar took part in all events in athletics and after winning a medal in the school she was asked to take up athletics seriously by her parents and following advice from her first coach Mrinal Dewan, she started doing long jump. She was a student in the 4th standard then.
Konkana while commenting on the beginning of her career said,
“There is a place named Katihar. It was near to my home. I started doing the long jump under the training of Mrinal sir. I did not have spiked shoes at that time. It was difficult for my father to provide that. I used to do long jump wearing normal sneakers.”
Memorable 10 Days
After Inter-District Junior National held in 2019, two girls were selected by legendary long jumper Anju Bobby George‘s sports foundation and Konkana was one of those two selected long jumpers. It was a 10-day program. Konkana still becomes excited while sharing her experience.
“Since my childhood, I have idolized Anju Bobby George and she selected me to train at her academy during the Inter-District Junior National championship. I felt as if my dream came true. It was a great experience. I learned a lot in those 10 days from the basics to the psychological part. Anju Bobby George and her husband and coach Robert Bobby George, both inspired me a lot through their pieces of advice. The experience of those 10 days helps me to prosper as a long jumper every day.”
Konkana has been selected at the Sports Authority of India (SAI) at its Jalpaiguri center and she is training there for the last 10 months under the guidance of athletics coach Wasim Ahmed.
The Aim and Influence of Motivating Films
Konkana Sardar has been categorized in the Under-18 age group this year. However, she aims to win medals in the senior age group.
She explained it more precisely saying,
“I want to achieve such a feat at the senior level so that my name is remembered just as Anju Bobby George’s name in the history of Indian athletics has been inscribed.”
Konkana revealed that sports movies like ‘Dangal’ and ‘M.S Dhoni: The Untold Story’ have also motivated her a lot. She said,
“These movies also inspire, and help me to become psychologically strong.”
