Kidambi Srikanth and Ashmita Chaliha emerged victorious in the men’s and women’s singles selection trials, ensuring their places in the individual event of the Asian Games. The players secured their places in the individual event by remaining unbeaten in their six matches during the four-day long trials held at the Jwala Gutta Badminton Academy. With their selection, Srikanth and Chaliha will join PV Sindhu and HS Prannoy in representing India in the continental event.
Former world number one Srikanth, who won the silver medal at the 2021 World Championship, topped group A with three wins before beating Siddhanth Gupta and Lakshya Sen to top stage 2. In women’s singles, Chaliha and Anupama Upadhyaya clinched the top two positions followed by Malvika Bansod in stage 2, while Unnati Hooda finished at the bottom.
In mixed doubles, Sai Pratheek K and Tanisha Crasto finished at the top, while Dhruv Kapila and MR Arjun came out on top for men’s doubles. Tanisha and Ashwini Ponnappa clinched the top spot for women’s doubles, while the selectors named Gayatri Gopichand and Treesa Jolly as the other women’s doubles pair for the team.
The Asian Games are scheduled to be held from September 23 to October 8 in Hangzhou, China.
